This invention relates to an ornament, and more particularly to an ornament for personal I Wear.

The principal object is to provide an ornament of novel and simple construction which is intended primarily to be worn in womens or childrens hair in the manner of an ornamental hairpin or barrette, and which may be used for other ornamental purposes, as for instance to be worn on the lapel of a mans or womans coat as a simulated boutonniere.

The device comprises an ornamental body, which may be in the form of an imitation flower, or in any other form, mounted on the bight end of a conventional spring clasp. The present invention is concerned principally with the assembly of the ornamental body and the spring clasp.

An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the ornament, partg ly in section; and

Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3, viewed in the direction of the arrows.

The device includes a conventional spring clasp of the hairpin or so-called bobby pin type, consisting of a single piece of spring metal bent to form two legs I0 and II having a. connecting The leg Il may be somewhat longer than the other leg and may have its extremity I3 slightly curved. The leg I0 may be covered on its outer face, or entirely, with a covering I 4 of molded plastic substance or other suitable material of any desired color which covering may extend over, or part way over, the bight I2. The covering I4, however, is not essential and may be omitted.

I5 represents a hollow ornamental body which is preferably-made of molded plastic substance, but which may be made of metal or other suitable material, and shaped in imitation of a flower or of any other desired ornamental object. The body I5 has an interior cavity I6, an opening I! through one wall, and a second opening I8 through the bottom or through a point suitably spaced from the opening [1. The ornament may be made of colored material or may be otherwise colored. In the present instance, the ornament is shown, for the purpose of illustration but not of limitation, in the form of a calla lily.

In assembling the parts, the spring clasp is inserted in the cavity I6 of the body I5, with the leg ll passing through the opening I! and the leg l0 passing through the opening I8. The ornament is then slid lengthwise on the clasp, or the clasp is slid lengthwise relative to the ornament, until the bight I2 of the clasp is caught in the opening I1, as seen in Fig. 3. In this position the ornament is supported on the bight I2 and is held against endwisedisplacement by engagement of the bight in the opening I! and against lateral displacement by embracement of the arm I 0 in the opening Ill. The ornament may, if desired, be cemented on the bight end of the clasp.

It will be seen that the covered leg I0 extends down through the center of the flower shaped ornament and simulates the stem of the flower. To this end the leg I0 preferably has a green covering which enhances the simulation. It should also be noted that the attachmentof the ornament to the clasp is such as not to interfere with the proper functioning of the clasp or with the resiliency of its legs.

To further enhance the ornamental effect, as well as to assist in securing the ornament in place, the member I9, shaped to represent the stamen or pistil of the flower, may be inserted in the cavity l6 of the body l5 and cemented to the leg In at the bight end of the clasp. The member I9 also serves to mask the bight of the clasp in the assembled structure.

I claim:

1. A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight, a hollow ornament mounted on the clasp at its bight end with one leg of the clasp passing through an opening in the ornament and with the bight portion thereof passing through a second opening, whereby to 'hold the ornament securely in place.

2. A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight, a hollow ornament mounted on the clasp at its bight end, the two legs of the clasp passing through openings in the ornament at dllTerent points, with the bight of said clasp engaged in one of said openings.

3. A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight and an ornamental body in the form of an imitation flower mounted on the clasp and supported upon the bight thereof.

4; A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight, an ornamental body in the form of an imitation flower mounted on the bight end of the clasp with said bight passing through an opening in the body.

5. A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight, an ornamental body in the form of an imitation flower mounted on the bight end of the clasp, one leg of the clasp extending from the interior through an opening in the body and formed in imitation of the stem of a flower, and the other leg and bight extending through a second opening in said body.

6. A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight, an ornamental body in the form of an imitation flower mounted on the bight end of the clasp, one leg of the clasp extending from the interior through an opening in the, body and formed in imitation of the stem of a flower, and the other leg and bight extending through a second opening in said body, and a simulated stamen positioned within the ornamental body and secured to the bight end of the clasp.

7. A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight, and a hollow ornamental body secured to the clasp at its bight end.

8. A new article of manufacture comprising a spring clasp having two legs and a connecting bight, and a hollow ornamental body formed in simulation of a flower mounted on the bight end of the clasp, one leg of the clasp protruding through substantially the center of the body in simulation of the stem of the flower.
