SAFETY HOLDER FOR EARRINGS Filed Dec. 29, 1945 5 I I INVENTOR lga/ E Tkraras rz BY 5 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 20, 1?51 UNITED STATES ATENTM orrlcr.
SAFETY HOLDER FOR EARRINGS Olaf H. Thronsen New York, N. Y. v
' Application December 29, 1945, Serial No. 638,219
' 2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a new and novel type of safety holder for earrings or ear ornaments, more particularly, it relates to a holder for earrings permitting secure attachment of earrings or similar ear ornaments insuring the owner against loss of the earrings once applied.
The device of the new invention is extremely simple in construction and very simple in operation. It can readily be made from well known, economical and available material. In spite of its many advantages it would not in any way detract from the attractiveness of an ear ornament and would not increase the discomfort of the wearer.
Far from this, it will actually completely eliminate the need for perforating the ear lobe permitting a wide number of persons heretofore unable to wear ear ornaments, the enjoyment of this attractive accessory. In contrast to perforation of the ear lobes the new device is entirely safe in application and extremely hygienic as well as highly conserving of ear ornaments.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the attached drawings forming an important part of the specification where similar parts are denoted as similar numerals? Fig. 1 is a front view illustrating an ear ornament attached to the product of the instant invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view illustrating the device of the preceding figure.
Fig. 3 is a side View illustrating attachment device apart from the ear ornament.
Fig. 4 is a front view illustrating another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through line 6-43 of Fig. 4.
In accordance with the invention, an ear ornament II] is attached to a holder H'having a conventional clamp l2 fit to a clamp around an ear lobe to which it may be tightly attached by means of set screw 23. In a direction opposite to said clamp l2 there extends from holder H a piece of narrow resilient wire M which ends in a narrow bent I5 extending into a stiffened extension plate lfi which may be in the shape of a little round ball.
The entire attachment H is so formed as to permit insertion of extension plate 16 into the natural hollow just above the ear lobe when screw [3 is set so as to tightly attach ornament if! to the ear lobe itself.
The operation of this embodiment which is illustratedin Figs. 1-3 of the invention is as follows:
An ornament I0 is soldered or otherwise attached to attachment H. The attachment is then fitted on an ear lobe by putting clamp I2 around the lower limit of the ear lobe and inserting disc I6 into the round opening just above the ear lobe. After set screw [3 has been regulated so as to tightly attach clamp [2 around the ear lobe, a secure hold of the ornament on the ear has been obtained.
In another embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 4-6, the same type of clamp I2 and set screw I3 is utilized. However, this time a plurality of resilient wires 15 replace resilient wire E5 of the preceding embodiment. The two outermost resilient wires l5 have little teeth near the point where they extend from the body of attachment I I. These teeth ll extend in each case in an outward direction as shown. A small staple like clamp [8 can be moved along wires l5 hooking into teeth I! as desired. This will lock the wires l5 in any desired relation to each other.
In the operation of the device of Figs. 4-6 the attachment is fitted around the ear lobe as in the preceding device but individual extensions 15' are adjusted so as to fit the interior outline of the particular ear of the wearer when disc I6 is inserted as desired. Staple like clamp 18 is now moved along the wires l5 and teeth ll so as to securely lock them into position.
From the above description, it will be readily seen that a device has been created permitting secure attachment of ornaments of all types to the human ear and particularly to the ear lobe. The danger of losing an ear ornament while wearing it is substantially less where one uses the present invention.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In an earring including a lobe clamp mounting an ornament, a safety attachment comprising, a pair of resilient extensions formed integrally with the lobe clamp and projecting in spaced relationship from the lobe clamp, said extensions terminating in arcuate portions, the extremity of each arcuate portion mounting a globular disc adapted to engage in the hollow of the human ear above the lobe, and means for adjusting the spaced relationship of the resilient extensions. 1
2. An fearring comprising, a substantially U-shaped lobe clamp provided with a set screw operating transverse the open end thereof, an ornament secured on one leg of the clamp, that end of said leg beyond said ornament being divided to form a part of spaced resilient extensions, the extremity of each of said extensions terminating in an arcuate portion, a globular disc supported at the extreme end of each arouate extension portion adapted to engage in the natural hollow of the ear, above the lobe, teeth 4 formed along each of said extensions adjacent their juncture at the clamp, and a staple-like clamp disposed between and having selectively locking engagement with the teeth of said extensions.
