IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF TAPING FURS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223.196, dated December 30, 1879; application filed October 11,4879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL R. VoLKEL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Taping Furs, of which the following is a specification.

Heretofore it has been customary, in taping furs, to cut the hide of the animal into a number of strips of equal width, and then to unite these strips again by sewing them to strips of cloth, so that the strips of cloth and fur alternate. As the skin of the animal is very tender, the thread cuts into it, and fur made as above described will tear and break, especially at the seams, in a very short time.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved method of taping furs which is simple and effective, and produces a strong and durable fur.

The invention consists in the improved method of taping by fastening the strips of fur to some suitable backing by means of adhesive materials.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure L is a vertical cross-sectional view of a fur taped according to my method. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, showing the hair removed from a part of the strips.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents a backing of cloth, linen, leather, or some other suitable material. B represents the india -rubber cement or some other suitable adhesive material, and O 0 represent the strips of fur.

The hide is first nailed and dried in the ordinary manner, and at least five coats of india-rubber cement are applied to the leather, about four hours being allowed between each coat for drying. The skin is then cut into a number of strips of suitable width, either in the direction of the length of the fur or across the same, thelatter being preferable, as itproduces a handsomer fur. One or more coats of rubber cement are applied on the backing, and the strips are laid onto the same the proper distance apart, and then rolled.

If a fur is made in the abovedcscribed man nor, the strips can be placed any desired distance from each other, according to the thickness and richness of the fur that is desired.

The skin of an animal will produce a much larger fur if taped in the manner described above than it would if it were taped according to the old method, for no sewing whatever is done, and there are no threads to cut the for to pieces and no seams that would break.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The within-described method of taping furs, consisting of applying a few coats of rubber cement or some other suitable adhesive material to the back of the skin, cutting the. same into strips, and then fastening these strips to a backing of cloth or some suitable material by means of this adhesive material, substantially as shown and set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, the within-described furs, made by applyin indiarubber cement or some other suitable adhesive material to the back of a skin, cutting the sameinto strips, and then fastening these strips onto a backing by means of this adhesive material, substantially as shown and set forth.
