UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDYVIN M. GOLDSMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT-CHART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,552, dated November 27, 1888.
Application filed February 20, ISFS. Serial No. 9.65.607.
T0 aZZ whom it 771/601] concern:
Be it known that I EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofPhiladelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Charts for Garments, which improvelncnt is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
My invention consists of a novel chart for outlining a garment or parts thereof preparatory to cutting, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The figure represents a face or plan view of a chart embodying my invention.
A. represents patterns of various parts of a garment which are secured to a foraminous backing, B-such as gauze, netting, perforated paper, or other material-the portions a of the backing side of the edges of the patterns being uncovered. The patternsmay be made of paper or other suitable material, and are se cured to the backing by gumming, cementin g, pinning, or other suitable means. In some cases I may employ paper having a coating of ad 11 esivc material, the coated face being placed on the backing and a hot iron then pressed over the pattern, causing its adhesion to the backing. The pattern as connected with the backing is now placed on the cloth or other fabric from which a garment is to be cut, and a powder of suitable color then rubbed or dusted over the portions a of the backing, the same passing through the openings of said portions and settled on the fabric, thus outlining the patterns on the fabric, the subse- (N'o model.)
quent action of cutting the goods being guided by the outlines thereon.
The parts of the fabric which are covered by the powder form scraps or waste usual in garuncut-cutting.
It is evident that the patterns as backed may be reused as often as desired and that ex isting patterns of an establishment or store are serviceable for my purpose by properly connccting them with a backing.
I am aware that it is notnew to form or construct a pattern having perforated edges, through which the outlines of the garment may be traced; neither is it new to prepare a stencil-plate having wires or wire-cloth occupying the letter spaces of the same; but I am not aware that it is old to form a garmentchart of a paper pattern secured to a foraminous backing the edges of which extend be yond the pattern.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A new article of manufacture consisting of a garment-chart composed of a pattern and a foraminous backing or piece of material, said pattern and backing being secured together, the edges of the backing extending beyond the edges of the pattern, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
