INSOLE FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,964, dated November 29, 1887.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. DAME, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lynn,in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Im provements in Insoles for Boots or Shoes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in IQ soles for boots or shoes, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accomnying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my improved sole, and Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
My invention relates more particularly to improvements in that class of soles termed insoles for boots or shoes; but the invention is also useful for middle or outer soles; and it consists in a'novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described.
The object of my invent-ion is to produce a flexible water-proof and durable sole for the purpose stated.
In the drawings, A, b, O, and B represent the sheets or materials of which the sole iscomposed. The upper sheet, A, is made of leather. The sheet 0 is made of woven cloth or knitted material, preferably such, for instance, as is used in the manufacture of oil- 3 5 cloth, floor-carpets, and to the top and bottom sides of such sheet 0 are applied oil-paints b and B, either in the form of one or more coatings of ordinary oil-paints, oil-fillings, or oil or oil-paints mixed with any suitable powder,
0 such as are commonly used in the manufacture of oil-cloth floor-carpetings. In fact the sheets 12, O, and B are arranged and combined together similar to the manner in which oilcloth floor-carpets are made; but I do not wish to confine myself tothe precise manner and ingredients used in such oil-cloth floor-carpetings, as the sheets I) and B may be made of oil or oil-paints mixed with any suitable material cording to the object for which it may be used.
In making this my improved sole I take a sheet, 0, of knitted or woven material and apply to its top and bottom sides one or more coatings, b B, of the material or materials 5 5 aforesaid, and after such are properly set, dried, or hardened, I attach, by means of paste or suitable adhesive material, (preferably a water-proof cement) the leather sheet A to the top of the sheet so made, and after the whole is dry I cut, by means ofa suitable die or similar tool, the soles of the desired form and size.
I do not wish to confine myself to any particular manner of'applying the oil-paints or'65 mixture 1) B to the woven or knitted material C, as this may be done by meanstof brushes, scrapers, rollers, or other well-known devices; neither do Iwish to confine myself to any particular kind of woven or knitted material O to which the oil-paint or mixture 1) B are applied; but in practice I prefer touse a coarse woven material to enable the oil-paints or mixture to pass through between its fibers, and thus unite the composition layers to each other and to the material 0.
Having thus fully described the nature and construction of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described sole for boots or shoes, consisting of the woven or knitted material 0, having one or both of its sides coated with oilpaints or mixtures 12 B, combined with the sheet of leather A, pasted or cemented to one side of the oil-painted fabric 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
