ASA K. POTTER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CABINETS FOR HOLDING AND EXHlBlTlNG ENGRAVINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,640, dated December 16, 1879; application filed November 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA K. POTTER, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Cabinet for Holding and Exhibiting Engravings, 820.; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connectionwith the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The objects of my invention are to provide in a single piece of furniture compartments for holding engravings, photographs, and articles of like character in a vertical position,
so that any definite one may be conveniently selected and removed. without disturbing the location of the remainder; to secure the said compartments to the frame of the cabinet in such a manner that when closed their contents will be housed within the cabinet, and when open the said contents may beconveniently withdrawn; and to furnish such a cabi net with a stationary or sliding top, upon which a frame or easel is rigidly or adjustably mounted for exhibiting said engravings, 85c.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents my improved cabinet in perspective with both compartments open, and Fig. 2 shows the same in vertical transverse section with one compartment closed.
lower edge to the frame of the cabinet so as to swing outward and downward, the amount of movement being governed by stops 1). If preferred, however, the compartments may be hinged to the cabinet-frame upon one of the vertical sides, and swing outward in a horizontal plane.
The top 0 may be immovably secured to the frame, but is preferably mounted thereon so as to slide for the purpose of conveniently varying the distance from the eye of an engravin g placed upon the frame or easel D, and also the better to accommodate the sitter.
The frame or easel 1) may be of any preferred design, and may be secured rigidly to the top G, or adjustably mounted thereon and confined in any desired position by clampscrews.
"A cabinet thus formed is extremely convenient, since a person sitting at it may procure from the compartments any desired engraving without the necessity of raising and. removing others, and may examine a series upon the easel without the necessity of changing his position either to procure or view them.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a cabinet having compartments hinged thereto and arranged, as described, to retain their contents in a vertical or nearly vertical position, and house said contents within the cabinet when the compartments are closed, a stationary or sliding top, and a frame or easel rigidly or adjustably secured to the top, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
