Description

N. BARTELL. Looking Device for the Tables of Ohildrens Chairs.
No. 222,001. Patehted N0v.25,1879.
WITNE s SE S. INVLENT OR.
agar/14x44, fla /1 I V IW M KWM/ yg fl' m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS BARTELL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKING DEVICES FOR THE TABLES 0F CHILDRENS CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,001, dated November 25, 1879; application filed July 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, NICHOLAS BARTELL, of the city of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Tables of Childrens Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of chairs which are provided with a swinging table attached 'to the front ends of their arms, which table serves to retain the child in the seat, as well as for a receptacle for toys, &c.
My invention consists more especially in the locking device by which one end of said table is temporarily attached to one of the chair-arms, as hereinafter set forth, the other end of said table being hinged or pivoted to the other arm in the ordinary manner, all of which is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end sectional view. Fig. 4 is a side sectional view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the staple which is driven into the lower side of the swinging table.
Like parts are indicated by the same reference-letters.
A represents the arm of the chair, to which my lockin g device is attached. B is the swinging table. G is a staple, which is constructed in the peculiar shape shown in Fig. 5, having angles a, Z), c, (I, e, and f. I
The staple O is driven into the lower side of the table until that part of the staple between a. and b and e and f bears against its surface, thus serving as a brace to sustain the staple in a rigid vertical position.
D is a catch which is secured to the chairarm A within the slot E. The slot E maybe quickly formed with a saw of the required thickness by a single cut.
The catch D is retained in the slot by pin F, which is driven through the arm passing through a hole in the back end of the catch, upon which pin the catch freely turns as the front end of the catch moves upward and downward.
Gr is a recess for the reception of the spiral spring H, which spring acts against the catch D.
I is a projecting shoulder, which enters the coil of the spring, and serves. to retain it in its proper position against the catch.
J is a small staple, which is driven into the arm beneaththe catch, which it supports and retains in the slot.
The staple C may be made of. wire, which is readily bent in the peculiar shape shown. It is made wider than the end of the arm A, that the warping or spreading of the arms of the chair will not prevent said arm A entering and the said device being brought into locking position. I
The table Bis locked by the catch D, which engages with the staple O automatically when the table is brought into the position shown. When desirous-to throw back the table B the catch D is raised, so that the staple escapes from beneath it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In devices for locki n g the swinging tables of childrens chairs, the combination of the herein-described staple G, having angles a, l), 0,01, 0, and f, with table B and catch D, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In devices for lockin g the swinging tables for. childrens chairs, the combination of the spiral spring H, catch D, as secured in slot E by pin F and staple J, with the staple (3, as secured to table B, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto, set my hand.
NICHOLAS BARTELL.
-Witnesses J. E; BEMIS, G. W. KESSMANN.
