Description
S. M. CRAIG. Fire-Lighter.
No. 221,784. Patented Nov. 18, 1879.
I E X W INVENTOR:
N PETERS, FNOTO-LITHOGRAFHEE WASHINGTON. D G,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL M. CRAIG, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-LIGHTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,784, dated November 18, 1879 application filed May 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. CRAIG, of Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Lighter, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus for lighting fires, lights, blasts, 850., by aperson located some distance from the object to be ignited.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a clamp holding a match and a slide provided with a roughened surface by means of sand-paper or some other suitable means, so that when the rough surface is drawn across the head of the match the same is ignited, and can ignite the paper, &c., of the fire or a light or taper.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a strip of metal, to which the standard B, provided with a clamp, G, and thumbscrew D for holding a match, is fastened.
E is a slide that can be moved in a longitudinal direction on the meta-l strip A. The upright part of this slide is provided with a roughened surface, either by fastening a piece of sand-paper to the same or by some other suitable means.- The surface is slightly con-' vex, and the upper edge is provided with teeth.
P is a string, by which the slide is operated, and G a strip of metal that is guided at H, and serves as connection between the slide and the string. 0 is "a vise, by means of which the apparatus is fastened to the stove.
The clamp O is provided with a point, M, to which the paper or othermaterial to be ignited is fastened or hung.
The operation is as follows: A match is fastened between the standard and the clamp, and the slide placed in the position shown in Fig. 1. A piece of paper or other very combustible material is fastened to the point M, so that when the match burns the same will be ignited. The string P is then passed through a few hook or ring headed screws or nails, and led to the bed-room, or to the place where the person operating the machine may be. It the string P is pulled, the slide moves in the direction of the arrow Z. The slide passes across the head of the match, and the friction thus produced will ignite the same. Thus the paper or like material fastened to the point M, and after that the other materials in the stove, &c., become ignited.
The apparatus can be fastened to any grate, hearth, &c., by bending the wire 0, as may be necessary.
This apparatus is very practical, handy, cheap, and always works well in all cases.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A fire-lighter consisting of the combination of a standard, B, fastened to a metal strip, A, clamp 0, provided with a point, M, thumbscrew D, and a slide, E, having a roughened surface for the purpose, and as set'forth.
SAMUEL M. CRAIG.
