Description
194- RABINOWITZ 2,216,134
GIRDLE Filed April 6, 1938 INVENTOR ATTORN EY Patented Oct. 1, 1940 GIRDLE Harry Rabinowitz, New York, N. Y.
Application April 6, 1938, Serial No. 200,320
2 Claims.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in a girdle;
Heretofore when constructing girdles. it was customary to apply a non-elastic stay thereto .5 and to attach the bottom ends of foundation straps, therefore to the garter supports, but this construction was found wanting in that stresses and strains upon the stockings transferred to the garter supports were then carried to the stay 10 causing it to shift relative to the girdle.
In constructing the girdle according to this invention the bottom ends of the foundation straps are attached to a portion of the girdle proper at points remote from the points of atl5 tachment of the garter supports so that stresses upon the garter supports will not be transferred to the stay and shift the same.
Still further it is proposed to support the top end of the non-elastic stay upon elastic support 30 straps attached to the top corners of the stay and extending substantially in the direction of the width of the girdle body and which are adapted to assist the girdle in compressing the abdomen when the girdle is stretched.
Still further it is proposed to provide straps with a means for adjustably attaching them to the girdle so that when the girdle becomes worn and stretched the position of attachment may be changed to compensate for the enlargement of the girdle.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompany drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a girdle turned inside out and constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is another view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating an adjusted position of the lower control slide.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of Fig. 1.
50 Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 6-45 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a similar view to Fig. 4, but illustrating a still further adjusted position ofthe control slides.
The girdle, according to this invention, in-
cludes; a girdle body 20 of knitted elastic thread 1 v is adapted to encircle the body at the abdomen region and is constructed of one way stretch material to stretch in the width only. A non-elastic reinforced panel 2| is loosely superimposed on a 5 portion of the elastic body for supporting a bulging abdomen. Foundation straps 22. are secured at one of their ends. to the bottom corners of the panel 2| and extend substantially in the direction of the height of the girdle body and are ad- 1 justably attached at their outer ends to the girdle body for holding the panel down. Garter supports 15. are attached to the bottom of the girdle at a point remote from the point of attachment of the straps 22 so that stresses upon the garter supports [5 will not be transferred to the panel 2| to cause the same to be shifted with the girdle.
The means for adjustably supporting the ends of the foundation straps 22 and the elastic support straps upon the girdle 20 comprises slide fasteners 24 attached to portions of said girdle in the vicinity where it is desired to attach the said straps. Control slides 25 are adapted to open and close the slide fasteners 24. One side of the control slides 25 are formed with outwardly extended portions 25 extending towards the panel 2|. These extensions 25 are formed with openings through which the straps pass for connecting the outer ends of the straps with the control slide. Pull tabs 26 are pivotally supported upon the control slides 25 and are adapted to be used for moving the control slide along the length of the slide fasteners 24. The control slides 25 are adapted to be rigidly held in their adjusted positions along. the length of the slide fasteners 24 by reason of the outwardly extending projection 26* formed upon a portion of the pull tab 26.
This projection 26 is adapted to extend through a complementary opening 25 formed upon a portion of the control slide 25 for engaging between the slide fastener 24 for locking the control slide in position.
When the control slide 25 is moved along the length of the slide fastener the point of attachment of the straps 22 and 23 will be shifted for properly positioning the panel 2! on the inner face of the girdle 29. This adjustment is designed to compensate for stretching of the girdle due to normal use to permit the panel 2| to be relocated with relation to the bulged portion of the abdomen which it is designed to compress. As the girdle becomes worn, it stretches, and the fasteners provide means for permitting the position of the panel 2| to be shifted relative to the garment for realigning the panel with respect to the abdomen.
The dot and dash lines 22' shown in Fig. 5 illustrate the manner in which the position of attachment of the foundation straps 22 may be shifted by varying the position of the control slide 25 along the length of the slide fastener 24.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A girdle, comprising an elastic girdle body of knitted elastic thread to encircle the body at the abdomen region and of one way stretch to stretch in the width only, a non-elastic reinforced panel loosely superimposed on a portion of said elastic body for supporting a bulging abdomen, foundation straps attached to the bottom corners of said panel and extending substantially in the direction of the height of said girdle body and attached at their outer ends to said girdle body to hold the panel down, and elastic support straps attached to the top corners of said panel and extending substantially in the direction of the width of said girdle body and attached at their outer ends to the material of the girdle body for assisting in compressing the abdomen, means for adjustably attaching the outer ends of said foundation straps and said elastic support straps to said girdle so that the positions of attachment may be shifted to compensate for the stretching of said girdle.
2. A girdle, comprising an elastic girdle body of knitted elastic thread to encircle the body at the abdomen region and of one way stretch to stretch in the Width only, a non-elastic rein-, forced panel loosely superimposed on a portion of said elastic body for supporting a bulging abdomen, foundation straps attached to the bottom corners of said panel and extending substantially in the direction of the height of said girdle body and attached at their outer ends to said girdle body to hold the panel down, and elastic support straps attached to the top corners of said panel and extending substantially in the direction of the width of said girdle body and attached at their outer ends to the material of the girdle body for assisting in compressing the abdomen, means for adjustably attaching the outer ends of said foundation straps and said elastic support straps to said girdle so that the positions of attachment may be shifted to compensate for the stretching of said girdle, said means comprising slide fasteners attached to said girdle at the points where it is desired to connect said strap, a control slide for operating said slide fasteners, a lug formed on one edge of said control slide and extending toward said panel, said lug having openings through which said straps are adapted to pass so that when said control slide is moved along said slide fastener it will change the point of attachment of said straps.
