W. NAMEGAH FORM OF CORSET.

Filed Aug. 4, 1945 Inventor Attorney Patented June 14, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FORM OF CORSET Application August 4, 1945, Serial No. 608,86 In Great Britain May 23, 1945 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a corset and like forms of ladies garments and has for its chief object the provision of an improved form of garment of this kind which shall be capable of affording increased efiiciency and comfort: in
wear.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of'such a garment which is adapted to fit snugly on the body of the wearer and be capable of adjusting itself to the movements of the wearer and at the same time prevent the protrusion from the body of the top front portion of the garment.
The invention consists in'acorset or like form of ladies garment wherein a portion of the garment in the region of the waistline thereof is made up of a facing and a lining material and wherein there is inserted in position between the facing and the lining materials, a controlling member adapted to enable the garment to adjust itself to the conformation and to the movements of the wearer.
In the preferred form of the invention, the controlling member consists of a 'resilient or elastic element arranged and secured in a position in the natural waistline of the garment, for example, so as to extend transversely across the diaphragm of the wearer, and so as to produce a ruche or ruching effect in the garment when the latter is not in position on the body.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of one form of garment incorporating the invention, the upper portion of a part of the front facing being shown removed in order to illustrate more clearly the manner in which the controlling member is arranged in position;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on the line AA of Fig. l and illustrating the rushing effect produced by said controlling member whilst the garment is not being worn, and
Fig. 3 is a similar fragmentary sectional view illustrating how the ruching effect is eliminated or taken up when the garment is in position on the body of the wearer.
The invention may be applied to various forms of corsets and the like and, in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings, it is shown applied, by way of example, to a corset garment made up of a front portion a and a back portion 1) which are inter-connected at their side edges by two 2 elastic portions 0 and d composed, for example, of elastic webbing, fabric or the like. If desired, a row of hooks and eyes, busk, or other convenient forms of fasteners may .be provided at a suitable position, for example, along the line e-e where one edge of the front portion meets the edge of the adjacent elastic portion 0 and the other edge f of the front portion may be permanently secured to one edge of the other elastic portion d. As will be seen, the front portion included between the lines ee and f--- is of tapering form and is slightly narrower in its upper region than in its lower region. The said front portion is made up of a central portion and the two side strips extending between lines f, .f and g, h, and e, e and 2', 1', which are formed with curved longitudinal side edges along lines g, h and i, :i, and which are preferably of single thickness material, and the central portion located between the curved longitudinal side lines g, h and 2', y, is made up of a backing or lining m and a superposed front or facing material n. Preferably, the backing or lining is adapted to extend over the full length of the front portion of the garment and the front or facing material terminates at a point somewhat above the lower edge of the garment and is formed with a cutaway portion 10 at its lower end. If desired, the backing or lining may be formed with a similar form of cut-away portion filled-in with elastic webbing, fabric or the like q.
In the preferred form of the invention, the part of the backing or lining which is located above the upper end of the cut-away portion 10, is formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending gussets or pockets 8 each of which accommodates a suitable form of stiffening element 25 such as a strip of thin metal, the said gussets or pockets being spaced from one another transversely across the width of the aforesaid central portion.
The aforesaid controlling, resilient or elastic member may consist of a strip of elastic or fabriccovered elastic w and it is arranged in position at or near the upper end of the garment and between the said backing or lining and the superposed front or facing material which together make up the central part of the said front portion. The location of the elastic member is such that it is adapted to extend transversely across the diaphragm of the wearer and it is sewn or otherwise secured to the central portion of the garment only at its two ends, that is to say, the upper or lower edges of the elastic member are free and unsecured to the garment. The manner of securing the elastic member in position is such that it is adapted to produce a ruche or ruching effect in the front portion of the garment when the latter is not in position on the wearer whilst, on the other hand, when in position on the wearer, the ruching efiect will be eliminated and the elastic member stretched or :tensioned accordingly so as yieldingly' to maintain the desired pressure on the diaphragm. In other words, when the garment is not being worn, the elastic member will produce a series of ruches r (Fig. 2) in the p.01:- tions of the backing 111. located between the pockets 3 and, when the garment is beingwom; thernches will be straightened out as is shownin Fig. 3 and the elastic member expanded.
Whilst the portion of the garment incorporating the said controlling element has been shown disposed at the front of the garment, it is to be understood that this is not essential and that the controlling element mayfbe arranged in any position in the natural waistline of; the corset according to the style of the corset: to which the invention is applied.
Iclaim:
1. In a corset,- asbody portion having a front section of non-elastic; material; a panel in the center of the front section. extending vertically therein, the panel comprising two layers. of nonelastic cloth, both layers being stitchedsat their vertical edges near the-sides of the front section and constituting the centralportion thereof, the rear layer having spaced vertical pockets therein for stays, staysin: said pockets theiront layer forming a smooth covering-1 over the rear layer and its pockets; saidilayets being stitched together across thertop; an elastic band. joined at its ends to the sides of the rear layer, the elastic band being located. between the: front: and rear layers at the top'of the corset and extending across the stays and pockets: and. contracting the top of the panel and forming an: integral concealed part of gig the panel to hold the upper ends of the stays snugly against the wearers body in all positions thereof and in normal wear, the front layer presenting a smooth unruifled outer appearance.
2. In a corset, a body portion having a front section of non-elastic material, a panel in the center of the front section extending vertically therein,. the panel. comprising two: layers of nonelastic cloth, both layers being stitched at their vertical edges near the sides of the front section and constituting the central portion thereof, the rear layer having spaced vertical pockets therein for stays, stays. in said pockets, the front layer forming a; smooth covering over the rear layer and its-pockets,- said layers being stitched together across the. top, an elastic band joined at its ends to: the sides of the rear layer and being otherwise free, the elastic band being located between the front and rear layers at the top of the corset and extending over the stays and pockets to contract the top of the panelagainstthe wearers body, the band comprising, :an: integrant concealed part of the panel, said. band extendmguponputting the corset on the wearer, and the front layer then presenting a smooth appearance.
