To all whom it may concern-.-

Be it known that I, ROSE FREED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention is designed to provide a corset or under garment, especially for womens wear, which, in addition to performing its usual functions is adapted as an abdominal supporter. The invention consists essentially in a one-piece garment that is to be stepped into when put on for personal wear, and is so constructed and fashioned as to be elastic to permit freedom of movement of the body, and at the same time, insure a close body-fit for supporting the organs of the wearer. The invention further consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts whereby the garment is readily adaptable to the conformation or figure of the wearer, and involves a detachable abdominal bandage which may be, retained in position for effective use as a surgical appliance.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention, involving two modes for its use, wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best manner I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the corset in fiat form, having a sanitary napkin at-. tached thereto, and with its side openings at the top laced together. Figure 2 is a view showing the garment in position for use, a portion only of the corset being shown in its detail of construction. similar to Figure 1, but with the laces at the sides detached, and the top front flap of the garment turned down to disclose the auxiliary or reinforcing elastic tapes, in this instance located at the inner sides of the upper edges of the corset. Figure 4 is a front View of the corset in use with the abdominal bandage in place. Figure 5 is a rear view. Figure 6 is a detail view of the detachable abdominal bandage.

As before stated the garment is in one piece, being knitted from silk, cotton, or

other desired thread, and in various sizes and colors, but of the general shape as shown Figure 3 is a View in the drawings to conform to the body of the wearer.

The body -or trunk portion designated as 1 is of tubular formation, open at top and bottom with flaring upper end 2 to conform to the outline of the bust and hips. A purling stitch is used in knitting the corset and vertically extending ribs .4 are thus provided forming an elastlc garment that will stretch laterally, but maintain its normal length or height. The difference between the contracted position and the extended position of the garment is readily. seen in Figures 1 and 2, where the ribs lie in close proximity in the former figure, and in Figure 2 they are shown spaced apart with the garment adapted to the wearers figure and the position and extension of the ribs conforming to the figure.

At the upper flaring end of the garment are side openings 5, 5, along the borders or edges of which are stitched eyelets 6, and laces 7 are provided for the eyelets to draw the edges together for securing the upper part of the garment in position.

Inside of the divided top edge of the garment I provide elastic tapes '8 and 9, that are stitched at regular intervals, as indicated at 10 in Figure 3, the stitches extending vertically, or in alinement with the ribs of the garment, in order that these tapes may be stretched longitudinally in conjunction with the lateral stretching of the garment body. These tapes, in addition to reinforcing the garment, also perform the function of rendering more rigid the upper part of the garment in order that its shape may be maintained under all conditions, and of course the tapes extend around and conform to the body of the wearer just below the bust.

Hose supporters 11 and 12 are arranged in pairs at the sides of the garment in such position that, when in use, they will extend downwardly at the outer sides of the legs in convenient position and out of the way of the wearer, the usual attaching devices 13 being secured to the webs of the supporters for engagement with the hose or stockings.

The corset is also equipped with front and rear buttons 14 sewed thereto the proper distance above the lower edge of the corset, to which the sanitary napkin 15 may be buttoned. Adjacent the napkin, the garment, because of its elasticity, readily adapts itself without puckering, to the shape teners including snap buttons 17 secured of the legs and stomach, and in this manner comfort and convenience are insured to the wearer. When not required the napkin may be detached and dispensed with.

As before stated the garment. is to be stepped into, and when removed, will be slipped over the feet, the elastic formation of the material readily lending itself to this performance, and, when the garment is in use the elasticity insures a close body fit to the wearer. I It will be understood that the elastic relnforcing tapes 8 and 9 may be used both at the inner sides of the corset, as in Figures 1, 2, 3, and at the outer sides, as in Figure 4, or one tape may be stitched to the inner side and one at the outer side of the corset if desired. In any event the tapes will be effective in performing their required functions of reinforcing the corset at the upper edges thereof.

In connection with the corset, I utilize an abdominal bandage, including a shield or pad 16 preferably made of elastic webbing, or other elastic material may be used, and of a size and shape to comfortably and neatly fit over the abdomen, outside of the corset. Preferably the detachable pad is attached to the corset by means of the well known type of glove fasteners or snap fasnear the topedge of the pad, and complementary eyes 18 at the front of the corset and near the top ed e thereof.

Three retaining ands 19 are employed for retaining the pad in proper position, and also for reinforcing the action of the pad, and these bands are preferably of elastic webbing with their ends stitched at 20 for a permanent fastening to the pad. At the rear, the bands are held in proper spaced position by means of snap fasteners indicated by dotted lines at 21 in Figure 5, these fasteners being of the same type as those for securing the pad to the corset at the front.

and for the hips, at the same time roviding, by their elasticity, for free om of movement of the wearer without unnecessary restriction of the organs in the performance of their functions.

The pad and bands may be attached to the corset before the latter is stepned-into, and because of the elasticity of all the parts, this may be accomplished with facility. When not required for use, the pad and at bandages ma be quickly and conveniently detached by isengaging the fastening members 17-18 and 21, and removed, and the corset is used as illustrated in Figure 2.

A tubular corset of elastic knitted fabric and formed with spaced vertically extending ribs, wherebythe length of the w corset is normally retained but its width may be expanded, said corset having openings at the top on opposite sides and eyelets at the edges of said openings, laces in said eyelets, and elastic reinforcing members for the topedges of the corset.

A tubular corset of elastic knitted material formed with spaced, vertically extending ribs, said corset being extensible circumferentially but comparatively rigid go along its vertical plane, openings at the top of the corset on opposite sides and eyelets in the edges of said openings, laces in said i eyelets, and elastic webbing stitched at intervals along the upper edges of the corset 35 at the inner side between said openings.

3. A tubular corset of elastic maiterial having top openings at opposite sides and laces therefor, combined with an elastic abdominal pad, encircling, elastic bands having their opposite ends permanently attached to the pad at the front, means for attaching said pad to the corset, and means at the rear for attaching said bands to the corset.
