HIRAM WESTON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKING-BOX HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,260, dated November 4, 1879; application filed March 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM WnsroN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Blacking Box Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to that class of blackin g-boX holders which can be manipulated and regulated to hold various sizes of boxes, so that the hands of the person using samemay not be soiled by the blaeking compound, and of such construction that it can be appliedor detached from the blacking-box with facility and ease.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for holding a blacking-box, which shall be simple in construction and reliable in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, in which letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a perspective View of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view; and Fig. 3 is a reverse View, showing the jaws extended and with the bot- The invention will be first described in con nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in claims.
A represents the movable jaws, with a flange inside, upon which the blacking-box F rests. These movable jaws A A open and close with a fulcrum, (l, by means of a screw, B, with two nuts, E E, said nuts being located and arranged on the sides of the shanks of the movablejaws A A and behind the fulcrum O.
The operation of the device is as follows: The
movable jaws A A are closed upon the blacking-box F by means of the operation of the set-screw B and nuts BE. A reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings will more clearly dem onstrate this operation.
A A represent the jaws when extended or opened, and A A when closed, the relative positions of the nuts when the jaws are opened and closed, as the case may be, being shown at E E and E E.
The method of fastening the handle D between the shanks is an important feature of my invention, as it allows the blacking-box always to retain a perpendicularposition to said handle.
It will be observed, from the above descrip tion of my improved blacking-box holder, that it can be easily applied to the box or detached therefrom, or, in other words, it is susceptible of being used upon boxes of different sizes, and that the box thus held can be used for applying the blackin g compound to a boot or shoe without liability of soiling the hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the movable jaws A A and shanks, operating on the fulcrum G, with the screws B, nuts E E, and the handleshank, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the movable jaws A A and shanks, the handle I), as and for the purpose specified.
, HIRAM WESTON. Witnesses:
