4. Claims.

The invention herein disclosed relates to the packaging and carrying of cigarettes and other articles.

Particular objects of the invention are to provide a pocket construction for shirts and other garments from which cigarettes may be readily withdrawn and to provide a package for cooperative use in such a pocket construction for supporting the cigarettes so that they may be easily withdrawn one at a time, as required.

Other objects and the novel features of invention by which the foregoing and other desirable objects are attained are set forth in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and broadly covered in the claims annexed.

The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates several of the possible embodiments of the invention and as the invention is understood, it will be apparent that further modifications and changes are possible all within the true intent and broad scope of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a broken front view showing one form of the pocket and one form of the package, particularly designed for use therewith.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken part sectional detail showing the package insertedin the pocket and the closure flap at the bottom of the pocket opened to provide access for removing a cigarette.

Fig. 3 is a further enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a broken face view illustrating certain variations in the form of a pocket.

In Fig. l, a garment of the work-shirt type is ,illustrated generally at IU, having a front pocket H, of special design to receive a package !2, of special design containing cigarettes i3, or other articles which it might be desired to carry in a readily accessible relation.

In this first illustrated form of the invention, the pocket has an opening It, at the bottom. of the same conveniently located for removal of articles from the bottom of the contained package.

The pocket is shown as on the left hand side of the shirt and the opening at the bottom of the pocket is shown as located in the right hand side of the pocket, that is, toward the center of the shirt, so as to be within convenient reach of the fingers of the right hand of the wearer.

The package i2 is shown as a fiat container of a size to slip easily into position in the pocket and having an article discharge opening l5, at the '5 bottom of the same and in that side toward the opening I4, in the side of the pocket, thus to bring the bottom cigarettes into register with the pocket opening.

The package i2 may be made up as a vendable l0 commodity intended to be used in a garment of the character disclosed, or it may be made up simply as a container which can be loaded with cigarettes and slipped into the pocket. In the first instance, it may be constructed in the nature of a complete box or packet having, as indicated,

a flap NS, for closing the bottom opening it, adapted to be held closed for example, by catching he end of the same in a slit ii, in the front of the box. Also, the top of such box may have (20 a closure flap it. Such package may be sold as closed in a suitable air tight wrapper, as customary with cigarette packages, adapted to be readily opened or removed before inserting the package as a container in the pocket. Before placing such a package in the pocket, the closure flap i 6, may be doubled back out of the way or simply torn off and discarded, thus in either event, to leave the bottom cigarettes exposed for easy extraction as indicated in Fig. 2. g

The pocket opening M is shown as closed by a cover flap I9, attached along the side edge of the pocket and as foldable over the opening in the front of the pocket and as held in such a condition by readily releasable fastening means such 35 as the button 20, on the front of the pocket adapted to pass through the buttonhole 2!, in the end of the closure flap.

The top of the pocket may be closed by a flap 22, secured by button fastening 23. 40

The cigarette package may be a relatively thin flat single row container, such as illustrated, or if there is no objection to the added bulkiness, this may be a full capacity double or triple row package similar to the commercial brands of cigarette 45 packages.

In place of the button fastening at 2!], 2i, a snap fastener, hook and eye, or other more or less conventional form of fastening means for the closure flap may be employed.

In Fig. 4, a slide fastener is illustrated at 24, for securing the cover flap i911, having a travel about the lower right hand corner portion of the pocket of an extent to release the corner flap (I9a) sufiiciently to admit the fingers for with- 55 Cit drawing cigarettes at the bottom of the box through the pocket opening Ma.

In Figs. 5 and 6, the article withdrawing opening Mb, is shown located directly in the bottom of the pocket and the front wall of the pocket is indicated as cut upward at 25, to freely admit the fingers, after the bottom closure flap I92), has been unbuttoned at 26 and dropped as in Fig. 6.

To cooperate with the latter form of pocket construction, the package I21) is formed with a slot opening 21, across the bottom of the same and the front and bottom walls of the package are provided with finger cutouts 28, 29, in line with the larger central portion of the pocket opening. In this construction, the bottom wall 38 of the container supports the cigarettes when the closure flap is opened and the cutouts 28, 29, admit the fingers for extracting the bottom cigarette.

Fig. '7 illustrates an alternative form of full size cigarette package, which may be used with the pocket constructions described and having an article discharge opening 3|, in the lower corner of the same extending across the end and front portion of the package, as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and also extending part way across the bottom of the package at 32, and which opening for packing and shipping purposes may be sealed by a compound form of closure flap, such as indicated at 33, adapted to seal those portions of the openings in all three walls of the box.

The invention, it will be seen, provides a neat practical way of carrying cigarettes, so that they may be easily reached and extracted for use. If desired, the pocket may be extended at the side opposite the closure fiap to form a pencil pocket as indicated at 34, in Fig. 4 and the actual structure of both pocket and container may be further modified. The pocket constructions are applicable to various kinds of garments other than shirts, for instance such pockets may be used to advantage on waists, jumpers, outer jackets, coats, overalls and the like.

What is claimed is:

l. A garment having a breast pocket and said breast pocket having an opening in a lower corner of the same extending from said corner a distance vertically up the side of the pocket and a distance horizontally across the bottom of the pocket, said pocket further having a flap closable over the vertically and horizontally extending edges of said corner opening and readily releasible means for securing said flap in position so closing said corner opening.

2. A garment having a breast pocket and said breast pocket having an opening in a lower corner of the same extending from said corner a distance vertically up the side of the pocket and a distance horizontally across the bottom of the pocket, said pocket further having a flap closable over the vertically and horizontally extending edges of said corner opening and readily releasible means for securing said flap in position so closing said corner opening and including a slide fastener element movable along said vertically and horizontally extending corner edges of said pocket.

A garment having a breast pocket and said breast pocket having an opening in a lower corner of the same extending from said corner a distance vertically up the side of the pocket and a distance horizontally across the bottom of the pocket, said pocket further having a flap closable over the vertically and horizontally extending edges of said corner opening, readily releasible means for securing said flap in position so closing said corner opening and an article container fitting snugly in said pocket and having an opening in that corner of the same which seats in the open corner of the pocket, said corner opening in said container being open to the vertical opening in the pocket to thereby enable articles being withdrawn horizontally out through the side of the pocket when said cover flap has been released and opened.

4. A garment having a breast pocket and said breast pocket having an opening in a lower corner of the same extending from the bottom of said pocket at said corner vertically a distance up the side of the pocket, said pocket further hav ng a flap closable over said side opening at the bottom of the pocket, readily releasible means for securing said flap in position so closing said corner opening and an article container snugly seated in said pocket and having an opening in that corner of the same which is adjacent said corner opening of the pocket, said opening in said container being formed in an end wall of the container in register with said side opening in the pocket and in an adjoining side wall of the con tainer thereby to provide access for the fingers to withdraw articles horizontally out of said lower corner portion of the container through said side opening in the pocket when said corner closing flap is released and opened.
