ENVELOPE FOR DISK RECORDS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLniM VVrnnunern,

a. citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes for Disk Records, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to envelopes for disk records, especially adapted for use in albums or loose leaf books.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved form. of envelope in which a plurality of records of difierent sizes may be kept in position where their titles are readable through the central openings of the envelope, and said records may be readily removed, when desired. Another object is to provide improved means for closing the mouths 0t both compartments of the envelope inorder to prevent the records from accidentally falling out.

A further object is to economize in the material used for making the envelope, the blank being cut and folded in such a way as to form a plurality of compartments from a single piece of material with a minimum oi? waste and unnecessary bulk. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end'ot the description.

eterring first to Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, the envelope 1 is preferably made from a single piece of paper, or other suitable material, cut to the shape illustrated in Figure -1 and folded on the transverse dotted. lines 2 and 3 to form the front and rear walls at and 5, respectively, and the intermediate partition 6 of the envelope. Said partition 6 constitutes one end portion of the blank and may have approxin'iately the same dimensions as the back wall 5 which constitutes the middle section of the blank. i tfli tcl the portion 6 is folded upon the portion 5, as shown in Figure 5, said portions are stitched, as at 8, or otherwise fas tened along a curved line to form the shallow pocket or compartment 9 for holding a small disk record. The mouth or entrance 11 of said compartment 9 is formed by cutting the material of the portion 6 at 12, near the :told along the dotted line 3 betweensaid portion 6 and the portion 5 of the blank.

Said cut 12 extends to said fold at each end and the material lying between said cut and said fold constitutes a flap 13 for closing the mouth 11 of said smaller compartment and also the mouth 14; of the larger compart ment 15 of the envelope.

Said larger compartment 15 is situated between the front wall 4: and partitions 6, and is preferably provided with a marginal portion 16 extending along its mouth 14: and adapted to be folded back along the crease 17, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2, topermit ready access to the mouth 11 of the smaller compartment 9. Said marginal portion 16 is formed a part of the wall 4 by cutting a slit 18 at one end thereof near the left hand end of the envelope, the other end of said marginal portion extending to the right hand end of the envelope wherethe flap 7 terminates at the base of said marginal portion. The open position of the flap 13 is illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2 where the folded down position of the marginal portion 16 is similarly shown.

Said openings preferably register with each other and are oval or elliptical in form with their longitudinal axes extending vertically or in line with the direction of movement of the records when inserted or removed from the compartments of the envelope. 19, 20 and 21, the title of a small record mounted in the smaller compartment 9 of the envelope, and indicated by the dotted circle 10 in Figure 1, will be displayed through the openings, as wellv as the title of a large record carried in the larger compartment 15 of the envelope and indicatedby the dotted circle 22 in Figure 1.

The perforations 23 are formed in the left hand end of the envelope 1 for securing the same in an album or loose leaf. binder, not shown, in any well known manner. Said perforations extend through the portions 4;, 5 and6 of the blank and alsothrough the flap 7 at the inner end of the envelope, making four thicknesses of the material where said perforations are formed.

25 and 26, respectively, and an intermediate partition 27. The partition 27 is folded upon the rear wall 26 along the dotted line 28 in Figure 9, and after this initial fold, the parts are stitched together, or otherwise secured at 29,'see Figure 19. in substantially the same manner as. already described in connection with the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive. The mouth 30 to the smaller compartment 31 of the envelope 24 is formed with a flap 32 similar to the flap 13 of the other form of envelope already described.

It will be noted that the modified form of envelope differs from the other form in having the entrances or mouths of its compartments arranged at the end instead of at the top. The blank, from which the modified form of envelope is made, is therefore folded vertically, whereas the blank for the other form of envelope is folded horizpntally. The front wall portion 25 of the blank for the modified form of envelope has flaps 33 at its upper and lower edges, said flaps being secured to the portion 26 when the latter and the portion 27 are folded, for forming the upper and lower edges of the envelope. The free end portion of the front wall 25 is adapted to fold along a crease 34c and constitutes a marginal portion 35 corresponding to the marginal portion 16 in the other form of envelope. 16 and 35 are preferably notched, as at 36, to facilitate the folding thereof when access is desired to the mouths or entrances 14: or 37 of the

15 or 38 of the envelopes 1 or 2e. It will be noted in Figure 6 that the flap 32 covers the mouth to the larger compartment of the envelope as well as that of the smaller compartment thereof.

In order to reinforce the inner end of the envelope 24 through which perforations 39 are formed for securing the envelope in an album or loose leaf binder, not shown, a plurality of folds are made in the material at the juncture of the front and

back wall portions

25 and 26. As illustrated in Figures 9 and 10, these folds are made along three dotted lines 40, and as shown in Figure 7, said folds take the form of an accordion plait 41 which provides four thicknesses of the material at the points where the perforations 39 are located.

I claim:

1. An envelope of the character described having a plurality of compartments of different sizes, there being registering openings of elliptical. shape formed in the walls of said compartments for displaying the titles of different sizes of records arranged therein.

2. An envelope of the character described having a plurality of compartments of different depths having their entrances at the. same edge of the envelope, there beingregistering openings formed in the walls of said compartments, said openings being of oval shape having their longitudinal axes extending transversely to the edge of the envelope in which said entrances are formed whereby the titles of records of different sizes arranged in said compartments may be displayed through said openings.

3. An envelope of the character described formed from a single piece of material folded with one end portion arranged between its central portion and other end portion to form separate compartments, there being an entrance to one compartment formed along the fold between one end portion and the middle portion, substantially as described.

4:. An envelope of the character described formed from a single piece of material folded with one end portion arranged be tween its central portion and other end portion to form separate compartments, there being an entrance to one compartment formed along the fold between one end portion and the middle portion, substantially as described, and a flap arranged at said entrance for covering the entrance to both compartments of the envelope.

5. An envelope of the character described formed from a single piece of material folded with one end portion arranged between its central portion and other end portion to form separate compartments, there being an entrance to one pocket formed along the fold between one end portion and the middle portion, substantially as dcscribed, a marginal portion extending along the entrance to the other compartment and adapted to be folded down to facilitate access thereto, and a closure flap arranged along the entrance to the first mentioned compartment and adapted to cover the en trances to both compartments and said marginal portion.

6. An envelope of the character described. formed from a single piece of material folded with one end portion arranged between its central portion and other end portion to form separate compartments there being an entrance to one pocket formed along the fold between oneend portion and the middle portion, substantially as described, a marginal portion extending along the entrance to the other compartment and adapted to be folded down to facilitate ac cess thereto.

7. An envelope of the character described formed from a blank having one end portion folded upon its central portion and secured thereto along an intermediate transverse line for forming a shallow compartment between said portions, there being an entrance to said shallow compartment formed along the fold between said portions, said blank having another end portion folded upon its central portion to form a deep compartment beside the shallow compartment.

8. An envelope of the character described formed from a blank having one end por tion folded upon its central portion and secured thereto along an intermediate transverse line for forming a shallow compartment between said portions, there being an entrance to said shallow compartment formed along the fold between said portions,'said blank having another end portion folded upon its central portion to form a deep compartment beside the shallow compartment the entrance to said deep compartment being arranged at the same edge of the envelope as the entrance to the shallow compartment.

9. An envelope of the character described formed from a blank having one end portion folded upon its central portion and secured thereto along an intermediate transverse line for forming a shallow compart ment between said portions there being an entrance to said shallow compartment formed along the fold between said portions, said blank having another end portion folded upon its central portion to form a deep compartment beside the shallow compartment, the entrance to said deep compartment being arranged at the same edge of the envelope as the entrance to the shallow compartment, and a flap formed from the blank and adapted to cover the entrances to both compartments.

10. An envelope of the character described formed from a blank havin g one end portion folded upon its middle portion to form one compartment, and its other end portion folded upon said compartment to form another compartment, one of said portions of the blank having oppositely extending flaps to be secured to the other portions for closing the lateral. edges of both compartments. I

11. An envelope of the character described formed from a blank having one end portion folded upon its middle portion to form one compartment and its other end portion folded upon said compartment to form a second compartment, there being a flap cut from the material of the first end portion of the blank to form a closure flap for both compartments, the fold of said flap being coincident with the fold between said first end portion and the middle portion of the blank.

12. An envelope of the character described having a plurality of compartments separated by an intermediate partition, there being perforations formed along one edge of the envelope for mounting the same in a binder, said perforated edge having more thicknesses of material. than the outer walls of the compartments and the intermediate partition between them.

13. An envelope of the character described having a plurality of compartments separated by an intermediate partition, and a flap at one edge of the outer wall of one compartment overlapping the corresponding edges of the outer wall of the other compartment and of the partition, there being perforations formed in said flap and the edges overlapped thereby for mounting the envelope in a binder.

14. An envelope of the character described formed from a blank having one portion folded upon another portion to constitute the alls thereof, there being perforations formed along the folded edge of WILLIAM WILBURGER.
