Description
R. G. RAMSEY. Fence-Post.
No. 220,988. Patented 0Ct.28,1879.
rUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICIEL! ROBERT O. BAMSEY, OF MERCER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN l-'ENCE-POSTGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,988, dated October 28, 1879; application led June 24, -1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT (l. RAMsEY, of Mercer, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements on the fence-post patented to me on the 13th day of May, 1879, No. 215,294, the nature of which improvements will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Essentially, my fence-post consists of an npright, F, secured to a base, A.
In my previous patent the upright or post is connected to the base by a peculiarly-constructed metallic brace and by a dowel-pin. To avoid the use of the latter and to simplify the construction of the brace is the object of my present invention.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the base, which is a block of stone or other material, having at each end, between the upper and lower sides, a lateral and horizontal incision or notch, vB. A metallic strip, D, iittin g on top ofthe base, is provided at each end with a hook, O, entering the notches or recesses B B. The upright or post Fis secured to strip D by a nail driven from the under side of said strip, washers Gr being interposed to regulate the height. Side braces E E are riveted to strip D and secured to the sides of the post 5 and additional hooked braces H may be employed, if deemed necessary.
By the herein -described construction the hooked ends C of strip D may be slid from the side into thenotches B of base A, which cannot be done in my Patent No. 215,294, above referred to. The use of the dow`e1pin is avoided, and the general construction is simpler and more durable.
Having thus Kdescribed my invent-ion, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I vThe combination, with the base A, having at the ends lateral and horizontalincisions B B, of the metallic strip D, having hooked ends C C, by which it may be slid upon and connected to the base, and the post F., secured to strip D by braces E E and a nail driven from the under side of said strip, washers G being interposed to regulate the height, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT O. RAMSEY.
iWitnesses: y
WILLIAM H. GRIFFITH, J AMEs R. RoDeERs.
