TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, B. S. HAVILAND, oi Fort Dodge, Webster county, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron Post for wireldence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable 'others Skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, Whining part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is an edge view hi my improved fence post, showing in red lines the relative positions of the wires.
Figure 2 is' a side view of the same.
Similar letters of refereniie indicate like parts.
My invention has forjts object to furnish an improved iron post for wire fence, simple, cheap, light, and durable; and it consistsof a cast or wrought-iron fence post made in the form hereinafter more fully described.
A is the post, which is made of cast or wrought iron. This post for an ordinary fence should be about two inches wide and one-eighth of an inch thick\ Holes, B, are'made through the post A for the reception of the wires. In the upper side of the upper hole is formedanotch, into which a key or wedge, D, is driven to hold the wire in place, as shown in red in fig. 1. A portion, a, of the lower part of the post, being the part which is set into the ground, is bent over at right angles to the plane of the post, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. This bent over part, a, is in the shape of a slender triangle, with the base downward. This leaves the part a, which is not bent over, also in the shape of a triangle, with the apex downward. This form given to the port of the post which is set into the ground gives stability to the post and prevents it from being pressed out of a vertical position edgeways or towards the sides of the fence. The post, A, is prevented from swaying back and forth by a slide bar, C, attached thereto. This slide, 0, is made with a keeper, 0 attached to the side of said bar or made solid therewith, which fits upon the post, as shown in the drawings. This slide bar, 0, is placed upon the post just below the surface of the ground. By this construction and arrangement, and by the sustaining power of the wires of which the fence is made, the posts A are kept from swaying either edgeways or sideways, and are kept securely in a vertical position.
v I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. An improved cast or wrought-iron fence post A, constructed as herein described, having a portion, a, of the lower part which enters the ground bent over at right angles to the plane of the post, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the slide bar 0, constructed as described, with the post A, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the key D with the post A, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
I B. S. HAVILAND.
