UNITED STATES PATENT EFICEc TOM PADGITT, OF WAGO, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAP-PROTECTOR ND BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,862, dated October 21, 1879; application filed September 5, 1879.
To alll whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, TOM PADGITT, of the city of Waco, McLennan county, State of Texas,
' come in contact with eyes or rings, as in the breeching, breast, or haine straps of harness and the eyes of metallic stirrups. At such points the strapis liable to wear and crack,
` due as well to the actual friction as to its being bent sharply back upon itself', and subjected to constant or intermittent strain.
In the accom panyin gdrawin gs, Ais a buckle having the usual cross-bar a' and tongue a, and a keeper, b, for the end of the strap. On the under side of the buckleshank isa second keeper, b', opposite the keeper b, and inter- 'mediate between them and the bar a is a strong cross-bar, c, having a button, c.
B is ahook formed integral with the buckle, and having its lower edge, d, projecting over the keeper bf, as shown. (See Fig. 2.)
In attaching the device, the main part of the strap C is, led under the buckle and over the keeper b', thence around the hook B and under the keeper b, and its end is attached to the button c. The other part ot the strap is attached to the'buckle in the usual way andy its end is tucked under the keeper b, preventing the accidental dislodgment ot the other end of the strap from the button c.
Previous to attaching the strap, as described, the hook B is made to engage with the eye or ring to which the strap would without it be directly fastened.
It will be seen that the hook prevents the abrasion ot' the strap, and bends it in such a gentle curve as to obviate all danger of its becoming cracked or permanently bent.
Especially is the device adapted for use upon stirrup-straps with metallic stirrups, in which case heretofore the strap soon became Worn at the stirrnp-eye, and assumed a per manent bend or kink, which was unsightly when the length of the strap was changed.
With the device described there is absolutely no local wear of the strap, and, owing to the curve ot' the hook, the strap does not become cracked or bent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the buckle A, having cross-bar c and inwardly-projecting button c', the hook B and keepers b b', arranged for operation substantially as set forth.
TOM PADGITT.
