My invention relates generally to paper clips or the like, and particularly to a paper clip which will not mark or scratch omce furniture nor make noise when contacted therewith, and is l more easily and pleasantly handled, besides possessing a greater friction grip while avoiding damaging articles clamped therein, and an important object of my invention is to provide a low cost and e'iiicient arrangement of this character.
Other important objects of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general top plan view of a clip in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional 90 view taken through Figure 1 at one side of the clamping spring.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numerals 5 and 6 refer respectively to metal plates as of suitable gauge and form, made in the bottle shape illustrated in Figure '1 of the drawing, exhibiting a wide clamping jaw merging into a narrower handle portion 8 which is provided with a three-quarter circular enlargement 9 so having a concentric opening it to enable hanging the clip on a nail or hook. The wide end of the jaw I is rolled as indicated by the numeral ii to confine and connect a similarlyrolled end portion l2 of the arm it of the horseshoe- 35 shaped clamping spring N. The handle portion 8 of both of the plates 5, 6 is slightly offset as indicated bythe numeral I5 to provide a shoulder for the curved bight portion l6 of the spring I5 to bear against to assist in maintaining the 40 arms of the spring in the proper relation and to assist the action of compression of the spring by operation of the handles 8 betweenthe fingers of the operator. A central longitudinal portion I! of each plate 5, 6 is set-up as indicated in Figure 3 of the drawing to provide a seat for thearm l3 and bight portion I6 of the spring id to prevent shifting of the spring. 50 They entire assembled structure described is coatedwith rubber, a simple manner of providing this over all covering of rubber being the dipping of the assembled article in rubber. The formation of the rubber coating l8 on the article 55 not only binds the operative parts together, but
provides a coating which eflectively prevents rusting of the metal of which the parts are composed, and prevents the inroads of corrosive agencies, besides providing the rolled ends of the jaws with a strong frictional yet gentle grip. 6 The rubber coating, being resilient and soft to the touch, prevents the existence of any sharp or protruding edges on the article, and renders the same soft and harmless to the touch of the most delicate fingers. 10
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the 15 structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope vof the subjoined claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: 7 go 1. A paper clip or the like, said clip comprising a pair of substantially plain plates providing handle portions at one end and jaw portions at their opposite ends, a longitudinal area of the jaw portion of each plate being laterally outwardly set out to define a longitudinal concavity at the laterally inward side of the jaw portion and impart added rigidity to the jaw portion, a horse-shoe shaped spring of flat metal, said spring having legs arranged to lie in and along the longitudinal concavities with the bight portion of the spring disposed between the plates at a point adjacent the longitudinally inward ends of the concavities, the longitudinally outward extremities of the legs of the spring being 5 engaged with the longitudinally outward extremities of said jaw portions and means non-shiftably connecting said jaw portions and said legs of the spring, said means comprising a coating of rubber surrounding and enclosing said jaw portions and the legs of the spring.

A paper clip or the like, said clip comprising a pair of substantially plain plates providing handle portions at one end and jaw portions at their opposite ends, a longitudinal area of the jaw portion of each plate being laterally outwardly set out to define a longitudinal concavity at the laterally inward side of the jaw' portion and impart added rigidity to the jaw portion, a horse-shoe shaped spring of fiat metal, said spring having legs arranged to lie in and along the longitudinal concavities with the bight portion of the spring disposed between the plates at a point adjacent the longitudinally inward ends of the concavities, the longitudinally out- -ing handle portions at one end and jaw portions at their opposite ends, a longitudinal area of the jaw portion of each plate being laterally outwardly set out to define a longitudinal concavity at the laterally inward side of the jaw portion and impart added rigidity to the jaw portion, a horse-shoe shaped spring of flat metal,
said spring having legs arranged to lie in and along the longitudinal concavities with the bight portion of the spring disposed between the plates at a point adjacent the longitudinally inward ends of the concavities, the said longitudinally outward extremities of the legs of the spring being laterally inwardly rolled, and the longitudinally outward extremities of said jaw portions being laterally inwardly rolled to conform to the exterior of and clamp on the associated rolled spring leg extremities so as to fasten the respective spring leg extremities and jaw portion extremities to each other, and a substantially unbroken rubber coating secured to and overlying and enclosing said jaw portions and the legs of said spring, and the associated rolled extremities of the spring legs and jaw portions.
