Description
W R. STOUGHTON.
WITNEEEEE: 7%INVI: N-rnee.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM It. STOUGHTON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIGNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,098, dated September 110, 1879; application filed June 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. STOUGH- TON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hanging Sign-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification. I
My invention relates to an improvement in signs; and it consists in making the frame of gas-pipes, so as to convey gas to all of the lamps arranged thereon, whereby the sign may be illuminated by night, and thus show to as good an advantage in the dark as by day, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing represents-any invention.
a represents thcframe of a swinging sign, and which is provided with the hooks d for hanging it upon a suitable supporting-arm. This frame a is made of gas-pipes, and is connected by a flexible tube at one corner to a gas-supply, so that the gas will pass around the frame and out through the small pipes h to the lamps i.
As the connecting-tube is flexible, the sign can swing freely back and forth without in any manner interfering with the supplyof gas, and thus the sign can be illuminated, so as to be displayed to as good an advantage by night as by day.
The boards b b, upon which the sign. is painted, extend across the frame, as shown, and are braced together by the ornamental braces c and the rods 0, as shown. For the purpose of allowing the wind to pass freely through the sign, the spaces between theboards are left open, as shown.
The frame a may be made solid, and the gaspipes run around it, it so preferred.
I am aware that hollow frames having lights in their centers, and having their sides covered with some transparent material to form a sign, are not new, and this I disclaim.
I am also aware that hollow frames for signs are not new.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a swinging illuminated sign composed of the frame a, made of gas-pipe, hooks 67, boards I), braces c, and gaslights h t, the frame being connected with a gassupply and made to act as a conductor for the gas to the lights, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the. foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of June, 1879.
YVILLIAH R. STOUGHTON.
