Description

M. NORDEN. ELECTRIC SIGN.
APPLICATION FILED APR.5, 1913.
1,102,788. Patented July 7, 1914.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORTIMER NOR/DEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNQR 'lO JOfiEPI-I NORIDEN, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
ELECTRIC SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July '7, 1914.
Application filed April 5, 1913. Serial No. 759,008.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MORTIMER Nononu, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Electric Signs, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore as far as I am aware, electric signs employed for advertising and other purposes have been so constructed as to comprise a frame or shell in which there are a plurality of lamps, and which when lighted at night, set forth the outline of the design, and in order that such signs may be the more readily intelligible during the daytime they have, I am aware, been provided with exteriorly extending flanges which have been gilded or painted various colors to make the sign more intelligible in the daylight. The exterior flanges which have been employed in electric signs however, have not enhanced or been the means of enhancing the appearance of the sign at night, and the object of my invention is to provide an electric sign so constructed that the flange or flanges employed to make it the more intelligible in the daytime, are also utilized to bring out its form and configuration and enhance the effect of the sign when lighted at night, as will be hereinafter more particularly de scribed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the letter I embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a cross section on line a, .r, Fig. 2, Fig. Qbeing a cross section taken on line y, 3 Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, it will be understood that while I have shown the capital letter I for simplicity of illustration, I do not limit myself to this particular letter or any other letter or any form or configuration of electric sign in which my invention may be employed.
In the drawing, 10 represents the base, which as will be understood, may be made of any suitable material. As illustrated, the letter I may be formed of a frame made of sheet metal or any other suitable material, one edge of which is connected to the base 10 in any suitable manner, the frame being open at the edge opposite to that at which it is secured to the base, and in the letter shown comprises the sides 11 and the ends 12. The free edge of the frame is provided with a flange indicated at 13 which extends inwardly and at any desired inclination. As will be understood, in suitably spaced positions in the base 10 there are electric lamps indicated at 14:.
The mose advantageous relationship between the position of the lamps and the flange 13,that is to say,the position in which to obtain the best effect, is to so arrange the lamps and the depth of the frame that the ends of the lamp filaments 15 are placed substantially on a line with the free edge of the frame and the central portions of the lamp filaments on a line with the free edge 16 of the flange 13.
As is customary, the inner surface of the frame as well as the face of the base, may be colored or painted in any suitable manner, and also the flange may be gilded or otherwise colored. In the daytime this internal flange is readily discernible to outline the character or design of the advertisement and when the lamps are lighted at night, a portion of the light will be thrown against the outer surface of the internal flange and reflected therefrom, while other portions of the light will be thrown against the face of the base and the inner sides of the frame, and reflected therefrom, making a sign having a varied colored effect.
I claim as my invention:
An electric sign comprising a base, an open sided frame connected to the said base and forming a character to be displayed, an inwardly extending flange secured to the outer edge of the said frame and a plurality of lamps fixed in the base within the frame in such positions that the ends of the lamp filaments are substantially on aline with. the free edge of the frame, and the central portions of the lamp filaments substantially on a line with the free edge of the said flange.
Signed by me this 24th day of March, 1918.
MORTIMER NOR-DEN.
