ALFRED L. SEWELL, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN.
LAM P-SHADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,079, dated May 8, 1900.
Application filed August 28, 1899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. SEWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buchanan, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shades; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lamp-globes; and the object is to provide a shade or globe with a map either of a celestial or terrestrial character that will be instructive and entertaining in addition to its functions as a shade or globe.
To this end the invention consists in a lampglobe preferably, though not necessarily, spherical and having its surface or interior delineated with a map, so that the same may be visible in the daytime by reflected light and transparent or translucent at night when illuminated from within.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-letters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved transparent lamp-globe. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the globe, chimney, and semicylindrical opaque shade.
A represents a clear glass globe, and B a transparent or translucent sheet of paper, celluloid, or other diaphanous material on which is delineated a map of the earths surface, which is fixed to the inside of the globe so as to be visible through it.
Besides the globe, as described, I have a shade O, opaque about half-way around, .between the light and the globe,half-way around its circumference, representing night, so that when thus moved around it will show how the shadow of the night moves around the earth.
D D represent wire rings fixed to the opaque shade and encompassing the chimney, so as to slide freely around it when manipulated by the handle E, fixed to the upper ring D.
I do not wish to confine myself to any par- Serial No. 728,806. (No model.)
ticular manner of fixing the map to the globe, as it may be etched on the ground surface thereof or printed on paper or other proper material and affixed to the globe, photographed, engraved, or painted directly on the globe, or produced on a suitable sheet of film and attached to the inside or outside of the globe.
In practice the shade C may be a cylindrical one the vertical half of which is clear and the remainder opaque, and in some instances the non-opaque portion may be of ground or opal glass to permit the illuminated portion of the outside globe to be studied without the intense glare from the light affecting the eyes.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details may be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A lamp comprising a transparent or translucent globe, having a map delineated thereon, in combination with an opaque shade interposed between the globe and the central source of light, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A transparent or translucent globe having a map thereon, a shade opaque half-Way around interposed between the globe and the light, and means for rotating said shade about said light, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A transparent or translucent lamp-globe having a map delineated thereon, in combination 'with a cylindrical shade, longitudinally divided into transparent and opaque sections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' ALFRED L. SEWELL. Witnesses:
I. L. H. Donn, OHAUNoEY T. LEE.
