i UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE.
I TIMOTHY J. COSTELLO, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,700, dated January 3, 1882.
Application filedMay 24, 1881.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY J. COSTELLO, ot' Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Signals; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as Wil enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form y part of this specification.
My invention relates to signals for use on railway-trains; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the same, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is an isometric view of my signal. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a section taken through lineas a2, Fig. 2.
A is a box or casing, which is provided with an inner door, B, said door heilig formed in such a manner that slides of glass a may be detachably secured on its inner side, and perforated slides b, having any suitable signal or num ber, may be detachably attached to its outer side in such a manner thateither the glass slides a or perforated slides b may be removed, replaced, or changed to produce a combination of signals, as may be desired. Thus, as shown in Fig. 1, the number of the train, the numher of the section, and the signal are shown. The signal-glass may be changed, by removing the slide a, and substituting any color desired, to designate Whether the train is a wild train or a regular train, and what trains are to follow, or any other desired signal. The perforated slides b having the numbers are made separate, each being provided with a single g ure only, as shown in Fig. 1, so that any desired number of train or section may he shown by changing them. The glass slide back of the (No model.)
numbers is preferably made white, so as to show in the day-time as well as by night.
C is a transparent outside door, which serves to protect thesignals and larnpfrom the weather. The box or casingA may be provided with doors B and C on both ends, as shown in Fig. 2.
Y D D are small recesses formed in the inside ofthe box or casing A, and which contain tlags c, of dierent colors, which are used in the daytime as a substitute for the colored-glass signals. These liags are hinged at the upper part of said recesses D D, and when notin use hang down out of'sight, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When it is desired to show one or more ofthe flags c it is only necessary to open the door d of the recesses, bring the flag or ags out to a horizontal position, and close the doors, when the top of the doors d (l, Which are made shorter than the openingof the recesses, Will support the Hags, as shown in Fig. 3.
The boxAis provided with any suitablelamp at night, and may be attached in any suitable manner to a caboose or engine, as may be desired.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with the hinged door of a box or cabinet, of removable glass slides and perforated slides and a transparent Outer door, substantially as set forth.
2. In a railway-signal, the combination of the recess D, -.igs c, and door d, said door `serving to support said flags in a -horizontal position, substantially as shown and described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specitication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
TIMOTHY J. COSTELLO. v
