UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE,
WM. CARSLEY, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARPOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2,195, dated July 29, 1841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM CARSLEY, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in the form of the harpoon used in taking whales and other large marine animals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof. v
The nature of my improvement consists in so twisting the flukes or barbs of the instrument as that, after being thrown from the hand, it shall, on entering the body of the animal, cut its way in an oblique or spiral direction, making the incision such that when a strain is brought to bear upon the line attached to the harpoon, either by the resistance of the animal, its efforts to escape, or otherwise, the flukes or barbs will be brought into a position more or less nearly at right angles with the lips of the incision, making it vastly more difficult than is the case with the common harpoon for it to be drawn out back ward by returning in the direction 01. the cut or wound.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I first construct my harpoon according to the usual well-known forms, either with one or two flukes or barbs, as shown at B, and
give to the said flukes or barbs such a twist as 7
