Description

yNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED S. PHILLIPS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND ISAAC ADAMS, OF SOUTH BOSTON, MASSACHUESTTS.
HAWSE-PIPE FOR SHIPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,702, dated July 5, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED S. PHILLIPS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Tubular Chain-Cable Guide for Vessels7 Bulwarks; and I do hereby declare that the saine is fully describedl and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l exhibits a longitudinal and vertical section of the ordinary straight cable guide or hawser pipe and a chain cable extending through the same. Fig. 2, is a similar section of my improved cable guide and shows the manner in which a chain cable is guided thereby through the bulwark or bow of a ship.
The tubular cable guide heretofore in use has been a cylindrical or conical pipe having straigat sides and a flange projecting from its outer end, an annulus or ring being often applied to the inner end and the bulwark as shown in Fig. l, wherein A denotes the pipe. a, its flange, L, the ring; B, the bulwark and C, the chain cable. In drawing a chain cable through a hawser hole or cable guide of this description the front part or end of a link is liable to catch against the corner or angle c, of the lower part of the pipe and ange, and in consequence thereof to be subjected, in moving over it, to a succession of jerks or shocks which overstrain and often break it. Besides this, there is great friction created on the chain by such angle or corner while the chain is being taken in or drawn through the pipe A. Furthermore, while a vessel is riding at anchor and pitching on the waves, there is niuch danger of breakage ofthe anchor cable or chain by the action of the said corner of the hawser pipe against it.
My invention consists in an improved manufacture of cable guide, as made with its body or pipe curved in longitudinal seetion substantiallyv as shown in Fig. 2, the external surface of the flange being made in continuation of the curve of the body and so that the chain while either running out or being drawn in shall pass over and on a curved surface such as will prevent the links from being stopped thereon so as to be thereby strained or broken. Such curve of the flange and the inner surface of the pipe will also operate to diminish the danger of breakage of a chain cable while the vessel held by it may be riding at anchor in stormy weather or while pitching on the waves.
In Fig. 2, A denotes the improved cable guide; B, the bulwark; C a cable or chain, a., the flange, the ring and d, the curve of the bearing surface for the chain.
I claim A tubular cable guide, curved substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature.
ALFRED S. PHILLIPS.
