IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,085, dated January 8, 1878; application filed October 26, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MCGILL, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw1ng,making part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon, and in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The nature of my invention consists in making a metallic fastener having a button-head, and, extending at right angles from the under side thereof, a vertically-split shank, consisting of two parts, which will penetrate together the same hole in the article'to be bound, and which may be separated and clinched down on the reverse side of such article.

I make my fastener from a piece of pliable sheet metal, cut as shown in the drawing, consisting of an enlarged head, having extending from one side of it a neck or prong, split vertically from its end to the said head, and bent at right angles thereto. The prong of the fastener so formed is run through a slotted washer until its head rests upon the same, and both the washer and head are then closed in a metallic button-head, as hereinafter described.

The object of my invention is to prevent a waste of metal in making the fastener, by enabling the button-head to be made of a size to correspond with the washer, and not with the size of the head of the prong, and to thereby admit of the same-sized prong being used in the construction of fasteners with various sized heads, and also to make the fastener stronger and more durable.

In the drawing, Figures 1 and 3 represent the prong and its enlarged head.

A represents the head, and a a, the divisions, of the prong. The split prong a a is bent at an angle, as before described, and is inserted in a slotted washer, B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and the washer B and head A are then closed in the metallic button-head O, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, which completes the fastener. The enlargement of the head of the prong is to prevent the same being drawn from the button-head through the slot in the washer.

Fig. 3 represents the head of the prong split on aline with the split in the prong proper, and nearly connecting with the same; and Fig. 4 represents the head, so split, separated, and its parts bent down in opposite directions, and at right angles to the prong a a, and inserted in the washer B, so that one-half of the head lies on each side of the slot in the washer.

No particular advantage is claimed for this arrangement of the head A other than giving the head of the fastener, when capped, a more uniform thickness of metal, and it is shown here on that account, and as an equivalent arrangement of the head A, which arrangement may also be accomplished by splitting the prong all the way through its head, and bending down the head parts in a similar manner.

I do not claim herein a fastener constructed of a metallic prong split vertically through its center to its head, so as to form two prongs cut lengthwise with its head, and arranged edgewise to each other and turned under its head at right angles thereto, for the same is old, having been shown by me' in United States Letters Patent No. 162,185, issued to me April 20, 1875. Nor do I claim herein anything shown or claimed by me in United States Letters Patent No. 56,587, of July 24, 1866; No. 60,250, of May 28, 1867 No. 162,183, and No. 162,184, of April 20, 1875 5 but What I do claim herein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A fastener consisting of the vertically-split prong a a, head A, washer B, and button-head 0, when combined and arranged substantially in the manner herein described, for the purposes specified.
