lMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARSL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,426, dated September 9, 1879 application filed August 8, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, EGBERT L. ALBRO, of Lemars, in the county of Plymouth and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horse-Collars and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the adjustable saddle. Fig. 3 is a detailed view, in section, of the end of the collar; and Fig. 4, a detailed view of the hinged or pivoted locking-plate.

The present invention has relation to that class of horse-collars adapted to be readily adjustable, both in length and width, to accommodate the collar to horses having necks varying considerably from each other in size.

The invention consists in the details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, A B represent two sections, composing the body of the collar, which may be padded similar to the ordinary soft or stuffed collar, or formed of any suitable material, and in any manner desired.

To the upper ends of the sections A B is adjustably connected a metal collancap, G, or it may be made of any other material adapted to the purpose. The collar-cap G has secured to its under side a pad of soft material, and

upon each side of the saddle are straps or b, the strap b having near its lower end a series of holes, 0.

, Within the upper ends of the sections A B are fitted blocks D, of metal,wood, or other suitable material, having slots d running lengthwiseof the blocks, into which are inserted the ends of the straps b, the straps to being inserted in slots in blocks in the rear of blocks D.

A screw-pin, 0, passes into the block D at right angles to its axis, and loosely through one of the series of holes a. This pin 0 is screw-threaded only upon its lower end, to engage with screw-threads upon the interior of a removable socket or sleeve, f.

A metal plate, g, with'a slot, it, through which the shank of the pin 0 passes, is secured to the block D, and prevents the pin from being withdrawn, the slot h being narrower than the diameter of the screw-threaded portion of the pin, so that when the pin is disengaged with the hole in the strap b the end of the screw threaded portion will strike against the under side of the plate g.

When it is found necessary to remove the pin, it is done by first removing the plate g from the block D. The socket or sleeve f has the screw-threads formed thereon by the ordinary means, after which the socket or sleeve is inserted in the opening formed in the block D, and retained therein by a plug, 41.

Should the screw-threads become worn on the pin 0 and socket or sleeve f, and render them inoperative or useless as a fastening device, the pin can be withdrawn, as can also the sleeve or socket, by removing the plug 1 when new threads can be put on the pin or sleeve, or a new sleeve and pin substituted. The leather covering of the sections A B is all that is necessary to retain the plugs i in their places.

A very simple and effective fastening device is obtained for holding the'straps b in the slots 61 when the straps are adjusted to shorten or lengthen the collar, as follows: To the lower end of the section A is pivoted or hinged a plate, E, with a series of holes, k, and to the end of the section B is attached a locking-key, F, so that the sections A B are securely held closer together or farther apart, as required in regulating the width of the collar. I

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.
