ASHTRAY FOR SMOKERS Filed June 21, 1939 ATTORNEY.
Patented Feb, 13, 1940 UNITED star;
3 ASHTRAY For s oKEas Irwin E. Colin,
Application June 21,
2 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide an ashtray forsmokers which will incorporate simple means for effecting rotation of a pipe reamer mounted centrally-within the tray,
5 the tray in other respects beingso formed as to bring the operating parts within the restricted v area and form of an ashtray having generally the appearance of 'ashtrays which have been found most suited for the purpose "and have become popular. I g l The invention will be described with reference 7 to the accol'npanying in which.-
Figure l is a top plan view showing certain elements in dotted lines.
Figure 1, parts being shown in elevation.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional elevation viding a chamber at 3 for containing the operative mechanism. r
Chamber 3 is closed by a bottom plate t which may be provided with felt disks 5. In the pres- BO ent embodiment the top of chamber 3 is closed by a plate 6 held in position by the rivets'l, plate is being formed with an upwardly projecting apertured boss Ex which provides a bearing member for a shaft 8. i
Shaft 8 at its top carries a reamerii, and the depending end of the shaft has fixed thereto the hub of a pinion Hl. In mesh with pinion it is a segment H pivoted upon a stud l2 carried by plate ii.
4.0 lever I3, the inner flat end of the lever lying immediately under the segment and being held immovably with respect thereto by means of pin M. Pin 44 at its lowerv end is engaged by a spring $5, the opposite end of the spring being 5 fixed to member 2 0)? the tray, the action of the spring being to normally hold the finger lever 13 in the position illustrated in Figure 1.
Carried by the tray in spaced relation to finger lever I3 is a thumb rest l6. In the modified form Figure 2 is a verticalsection on the line 2-2,
trally disposed upwardly extending flange 2 pro- Also pivoted upon stud l2 is a finger New York, N. Y.

"r or'rics over intothe tray at Him as a holder for cigars or cigarettes.
Plate 6 may be formed with suitably shaped depressions as. at time affording seats bowls of smokers pipes.
When the thumb of the operator is placedon thethumb rest it the forefinger or fingers may be moved to operate lever l3 and effect rotation to the reamer 9 with the pipe bowl held inverted and its interior surface held'in register with the reamer.
Theash' from the: pipe bowl will be discharged within the tray.
By reason of the formof assembly the operat nisin and tray parts are ing parts are brought within the restricted area of a tray-of normal sizejthe operating mechainexpensive and capable same time, the devicewill have strength and durability. Having described my invention, what I claim for the and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows 1. An ash tray for smokers having a ringshaped peripheral area ing'outer wall and an with anupwardly flarupwardly flaring inner wall, ahorizontal top plate for the innerwall, a chamber being provided within the inner wall, the chamber being covered by said top plate, a
' shaft extended through said top plate, a reamer spring tension means applied to the lever.
2. An ash tray for smokers constructed in aet cordance with claim 1, in which the plate carried by the inner upwardly projecting wall of the tray is formed with a bearingboss for the reamer shaft, and with article-holding channelways extending radially from said bearing boss, and a plate removably held by the tray below the' chamber covered by the ing boss.
