RECEPTACLE Filed May 21, 1937 M WW Patented Feb. 15, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE to Evans Case Company,
North Attlchoro,
Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application May 21, 1937, Serial No. 144,066
11 Claims.
The subject of the present invention is an enclosure which may carry a lighter of some type preferably in association with a compartment for carrying cigarettes or the. like.
The present invention contemplates a device which in its preferred form when closed may be smooth, uniform and regular in outline as distinguished from the combination cigarette case and lighter in which the lighter and its manipulating mechanism is exposed. Preferably the case will consist of two unit members which may be smooth and regular on their outer surface. On the inside of one member may be mounted a lighter in such a way that when the case is opened the lighter will be erect and available for use. Means will preferably be provided for causing the lighter to turn to be readily and entirely enclosed by the case as the case itself is closed.
The specific form of lighter employed forms no part of the present invention, nor is it essential that the case itself be of any particular size, shape or contour.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a perspective View of an open receptacle provided with a lighter. Fig. 2 is a similar perspective View showing the case partially closed and the lighter partially turned to its final position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1 showing another type of lighter in an open case or receptacle. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are fragmentary sectional views on the lines 5-5 and 66 respectively of Fig. 4. I
As illustrated the receptacle comprises two hinged members. The member Il] may be referred to as the cover and the member ll may be referred to as the base. The members are hinged together at l2 and at one end of the base member is provided a section I3 in which the cigarettes for instance may be held by the usual presser member M carried by the hinge l2. At its end the section I3 may be provided with a dividing member l5 beyond which is a section 5. The dividing member l5 tends to keep the cigarettes in place and out of the way of the moving lighter and also tends to keep the fumes or liquid from the lighter from affecting the cigarettes. Toward the end of the section I6 is fastened one leaf ll of a spring hinge l8. The other leaf of the spring hinge is may be fastened to or may form the bottom of a lighter ill. The arrangement may be such that the lighter IS in the open position of the receptacle is held upright or substantially at right angles to the botv tom member II, and preferably the lighter will be so held in very close engagement with the adjacent end of the base member ll. Such an arrangement insures the lighter when ignited being as far as possible from the cigarettes in the compartment l 3. As illustrated the spring of the '5 hinge I8 tends to keep the two leaves of the hinge together and so holds the lighter H! in the upright position. It will be noted that not only is the lighter mounted toward the end of the base member I! but it is also so arranged that the 10 ignitible member 20 is so placed that the sparks induced by manipulation of the thumb piece 2| are directed away from the inner side or hinge of the receptacle 12. It will be noted that the hinge I8 is illustrated with the leaves extending from the pintle toward the end of the base member II but this is not essential to the present invention.
A resilient member 22 is carried by'the cover member Ill, being illustrated as fastened at one end near the hinge I2 at the edge of the member Ill. The resilient member 22 may be of any suitable shape. It is illustrated as shaped substantially like the arc of a circle. As illustrated more distinctly in Figs. 5 and 6 the resilient member 22 25 is mounted so that its free end extends away from the cover member 10. It is so positioned that its end is normally substantially parallel to but out of contact with the outer edge of the lighter l9. turned upon its hinge l2 the extending free end of the member 22 engages the lighter l9 and by its resilient contact causes the lighter ill to turn on its hinge l8 so that it finally reaches a substantially horizontal position when the receptacle is in closed position. In this position the resiliency of the member 22 allows it to give and let the members I0 and I I come into final closed position in which they may be held if desired by any suitable means such as the catches (not shown) which are well known in the art. It will be understood that as the member 22 moves with the cover 10 it causes the portion of the lighter I9 which it engages to move in more or less of an arc with the pintle of the the center. For this reason it is sufficient for the member 22 to be substantially are shaped as shown, although of course a larger or different shaped member might be employed. For convenience and so as to avoid marring the finish or 5 defacing the coating of the parts it may be convenient to arrange the device so that the member 22 engages only the back outer corner of the lighter as in the arrangement shown.
In Figs. 1 and When, however, the cover member II] is 30 hinge l8 as 2 is illustrated a lighter of the usual spark and fuel type. The present invention may also be readily adapted to a lighter of the catalytic type as illustrated in Fig. 3 in which the lighter l9a has a cover 23 which may be released by pressure on the button 245 so as to expose the lighter 25 or the catalytic member. In mounting such a lighter it is possible to place the operating member 24 at the outer edge of the base member I I and thus any inconvenience which may be due to having the thumb piece 2i near the cover member ID may be avoided.
As shown the hinge I8 is at substantially a right angle to the hinge l2 and the member 22 while moved with the cover iii about the axis of the hinge I2 causes the lighter to turn about the axis of the hinge H3. The specific arrangement, angle and location of the hinge I8 like the form, arrangement and location of the member 22 may be varied, as may other parts of the receptacle, without departing from the present invention.
I claim as my invention:
