Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
HENRY MCCLAY, OF NILES, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED MOP AND BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,842, dated October 19, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MCCLAY, of Niles, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Implement or Device, to wit: a Combined Mop and Brush; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view of my invention. Fig. Q, a side sectional view of ditto. Fig. 3, a front view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several igures.
This invention consists in having a block or head ot triangular form with a handle tilted into it, one side of the head being provided with bristles and forming a brush, and another side being corrugated and having a cloth attached to one end, the cloth and head rendered capable of being so adjusted that the device may be used both as a scrub brush and mop.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a triangular or trilateral wooden head or block into one side of which at its center the end of a handle B, is secured by a pivot a, the end of the handle being fitted in a slot Z), in the head or block, as shown clearly in Fig. On another side of the head or block A, bristles @,are secured forming a brush, the bristles being arranged in the usual way. The remaining side of the block is corrugated or tinted longitudinally as shown at d.
C, is a cloth the ends of which are connected forming an endless band, the front part ot which passes around a rod e, attached to the head or block at the angle formed by the junction of the corrugated and brush sides of the block or head. The back part of the cloth C, passes through a metal loop f, which has a wooden handle g,
thereon provided with a ring g', which is fitted on either of two hooks la, z', secured to the handle B, the hooks being placed one above the other, as shown clearly in Figs. l and 2.
The implement is used as follows: Then the brush side of the head or block A, is to be used, the handle B, is turned so that the brush side is parallel with the Hoor and the ring g, is placed on the uppermost hook as shown clearly in Fig. l. Then the parts are in this position the implement may be used equally as well as a brush made for the special purpose. And when the implement is to be used as a mop the handle B, is turned so that the corrugated side of the head will be parallel with the Hoor and the ring g, is fitted on the lowermost hook 71, the corrugated side of the head retaining the cloth C, or preventing it from slipping underneath the head. The slot a, is made suticiently wide to allow the handle to adjust itself in a proper relative position with the head or block as the implement is turned for a change of work.
The implement may be cheaply constructed and will prove very efficient tor cleaning tloors and similar purposes. The cloth C, may when necessary be wrung dry, by simply turning the handle g, there being no necessity ot' touching the cloth C, and thereby wetting the hands. This is an advantage especially in cold weather.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The trilateral block or head A, attached at one side to the handle B, and having a brush formed on one of the other sides, the remaining side being corrugated and having a cloth C, attached, the whole being arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY MCCLAY.
