Description

C. B. INGERSOLL.
v Plow.
1%. 17,577. Patented June 1 6.- 1857.
N-IFEYERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHXNGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. INGERSOLL, OF MORRIS, ILLINOIS.
\ IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,577., dated June 16, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAnLEs B. INGERSOLL, of Morris, in the county of Grundy and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing exhibits a perspective view of the plow viewed from the land side.
The nature of my invention consists in cast ing the standard with two arms branching out from its rear and upper portion, said arms extending back some distance until they join at their extremities and form a triangle, whereby a firm support some distance above the sharebar for the landside-handle is provided, the standard braced and strengthened at two points where the greatest strain comes, without materiallyincreasing its weight, and the necessity of attaching the landside-handle to the sharebar avoided, and thus the resistance and cloggingon thelandside common with plows in use while plowing in loose wet lands completely prevented.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the standard, and A A the two arms or branches, castwith and on the rear of the same abouteight inches above the sharebar E, as represented in'the drawing. The distance between the arms or branches A A, it will be seen, gradually diminishes toward their extremities until they join each other and formatriangle. Bythusarrangingthebranches and joining them at their extremities a very firm support at B is secured for the landsidehandle some distance above the share-bar, and the standard braced at two points, and thus rendered more durable at points where the greatest strain comes-to wit, near the center of its length or height.
By examining the drawing it may be seen that a clear open space between the support A A and the share-bar E exists, owing to the landside-handle being attached at B. Itis by thus forming a clear open space and having only the laudside to come in contact with the soil that choking and clogging while plowing in loose wet lands are avoided.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The standard A, in combination with the standard-arms A A and share bar E, constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES B. INGERSOLL.
