lMPROVED CLOTH-HOLDER FOR WASHING CROCKERY, BLG.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,933, dated August 2, 1859.

To LIZ whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. GREELEY, of East Kingston, in the county of Rockingham and State of -New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Article of Manufacture-a iashing-Vise; and I hereby deelare that the following specification, in connection with the accompanyingdrawings and references thereon, constitute a lucid, clear, and exact description of the construction and use of the same.

In referring to the said drawings, Figure l denotes a side elevation, and Fig. an edge view, of it.

The nature of my invention consists of my within-described article of manufacture so constructed as to receive and eifeetnally hold the cloth or substance necessary to be immersed in hot water for the purpose of Washing dishes, Crockery, or other articles, while the handle portion of it allows of its effectual use with the hand and without immersing the hands at all in hot water, all as will be hereinafter seen.

To enable persons skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and carry out the same, I Will describe it as follows: I form the two main parts A and B of metal and hinge them together by the screw D, so that these parts can be opened and shut. Each of the parts A and B terminates in aforked jaw, (seen at E and F,) which interlap each other when they are pressed together to firmly hold the cloth or other substance, While they allow this same cloth to self-fold around and covering the exterior of these forks to prevent their contact with the article being washed, and in addition render as much exterior surface as possible of the cloth useful in performing the office of washing. The opposite ends of the parts A and B terminate in the handles G and H, and that portion between them and the eenteror screw D forms an inclined plane with each other` (seen at I and J,) and on which a clasp K is fitted so as to slide and bring these planes toward each other, and also the forked jaws E and E upon and in contact with the cloth, which is supposed and intended to occupy the position L. 'lhe size of parts A and B is properly diminished or necked down, as seen at M, to allow the forked jaws E and F to be opened wide by moving clasp K to the reduced part M, as seen in the drawings.

The inner surface of all the forked jaws E and F are made concave, (not shown in the drawings,) the purpose of which is to better hold the cloth or substance I. put between them to do the washing, the edges left or formed on the inner surfaces of these jaws by making them concave serving to closely and firmly grip the cloth or other substance at L with very little pressure of clasp K on the incline planes I and J. On the edges of these planes several transverse grooves or notches are cut, (seen at N,) and into which a corre spondingr ridge formed on the inner ends of slot in clasp K catches and holds this clasp as it is drawn back or on from the center D, so as to draw the incline planes I and J together, and also the forked jaws E and F to hold the cloth L between them. These notches N are formed alternately on each incline plane I and J, so that the ridge in only one end of clasp K will catch in these notches N at a time; but if desired they can be made opposite, so that both the ridges in clasp K may catch into these notches and hold at thcsame time.

In use the clasp is moved` to reduced part M, which allows the jaws E and F to be opened, and the cloth or substance L introduced between them. Then the jaws E and F are pressed together upon itby shutting the handles G and lI and the clasp K drawn on the incline planes I and .I and its ridges into notches N, which firmly hold it. My washing-vise is then ready for use.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture, is
