UNITED STATES EMMA. C. ANDERSON, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
COMPRESSOR.
Application led December 24, 1924. Serial No. 757,919. Y
1 To Lall whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, EMMA C. ANDERSON, a citizen of Sweden (first p-apers taken out to become a citizen of the United States), residing at Spokane, in Spokane County and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in compressors'or1 the hand operated type and of that variety especiallyadapted for use in the sick room, hospital and similar places where a sanitary, moist, dressing or bandage is used as a surgical dressing.
rIhe primary object ot' the invention is the provision of a device of this character by means of which excess moisture may be expressed from the bandage or dressing before the latter is applied for use. By the utilization of the device of my invention the bandage or dressing may be prepared in a sanitary manner and without contact from the hands of the attendant.
The device of the invention is comparatively simple in construction and operation, and because of its minimum number ot parts the compressor may be manufactured at low cost oi' production, and is not likely to become deranged or inoperative.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention where in the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure l is a. perspective view of the compressor in operative position.
Figure 2 is a. view in side elevation and part-ly in section showing the mode of operating the device.
In carrying out my invention I utilize an open receptacle or basket indicated as a whole by the numeral 1, which may be of cast metal with polished sanitary surfaces, and while the basket may be of various shapes, the preferred form is as shown 1 n the drawings where a rectangular shape is illustrated. The basket is provided at its open top with a continuous rectangular frame bar or upper edge designated 2, and the body of the basket is fashioned of parallel, spaced ribs 3 which depend from the iframe bar and extend across the bottoni of the basket to form spaces or slots 4 therebetween. As seen in Figure 2 the basket is designed to receive a bandage as B, which bandage or dressing mayA be handled in sanitary manner by utilizing the tweezers T, which, when `not in use, are conveniently carried iii pockets I) provided therefor in the upper tace of the frame bar 2 of the basket. The bandage may be dipped in or impregnated with the required moist solution or medicament, or it may be soaked in hot water, before being deposited in the basket. Then, before application to the patient, the excess solution or excess water is expressed from the bandage or dressing by manipulation of the compressor.
The basket is provided with a fixed handle 5 which may be integralwith the rectangular frame bar and projects therefrom for convenience in manipulating the basket.- At the rear of the basket, and in line with the fixed handle, a pair of spaced perforated lugs 6 are fashioned o-n the frame bar, together with a stop plate or abutment 7 which is inclined slightly away from the basket. These lugs and the stop plate may also be cast integral with the basket.
For compressing the bandage as it is held in the basket as in Figure 2 I `employ a iiat, rectangular head 8 of a size and shape to fit neatly in the interior of the basket and adapted to bear upon the upperface of the bandage and squeeze or compress the bandage or dressing.
The compressor head is supported from a movable handle 9 which is pivoted at 10 in the perforated lugs 6 and this handle which is alined with the fixed handle 5 is' used together with the handle 5 to hold and operate the compressor by the manipulation of the hands. Between the movable, pivoted handle and the compressor head is arranged a link 11 which is pivoted at 12 to the handle 9 and pivoted at 13 to the head 8, the axis of these two pivots being arranged at right angles to aord relative movement of the handle 9 with relation to the head or vice versa, whereby the head will lie iiat on the top of the bandage regardless ci irregularities therein, and when Figure 2, to permit convenient manipula# tion in depositing the bandage or dressing in the basket. Then ythe head is swung by means of the handle 9 to operative .position and pressurev on the head through handle 9 causes the bandage to be compressed for the purpose desired. By turning back the handle 9 the head is lifted out of the basket, thereby giving ready access to the bandage for the tweezers T which are manipulated in usual manner.
All parts of the device of conrse are made' up of Asanitary partsthat may readily be cleansed, the parts may be manipulated with facility and convenience,`and it vvill be apparent that by means of thev device the bandage or dressing may With dispatch and thoroughness be prepared for use.V
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent is l. The combination with a rectangular basket having a fixed handle, of an alined, pivoted handle on the basket, a compressor head, and-'a link pivotally connecting said head and pivoted handle, said link having pivots at its ends locatedin planes 'at right angles one to another.
2. The combination with `a rectangular basket'coinprising spaced, parallel ribs', and
a rectangl'ilar top fra-ine bar, and a handle "l integral with said frame bar, of a pair of perforated lugs and an' abutment plate 'on said frame bar, a. handle pivoted in said lugs, a iiat rectangular head, a link pivot:-
ally connecting 'said' pivoted handle and headand said link having its pivots disposed in planes at right angles.
In testilnonv whereof I ka-iix my signature.
' EMMA C. ANDERSON.
