UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BATTIS, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
BROILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,483, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed December 30, 1886. Serial No. 222,988. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, JOHN BATTIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broilers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in broilers for the purpose of broiling fish,
drawings.
In the drawings, a represents a metal case or shield of suitable size to fit the desired stoveopening, and said case is provided near its lower end with a flange, a, for supporting it on the stove-top E. (Shown in Fig. 4..) The said case a is slotted at its ends from the top to near the bottom, and is provided with a hinged or removable cover, I), having one or more perforations, b b, that serve for the purpose of allowing the progress of the broiling to be ascertained without removing the said cover or swinging it open, and also for the purpose of permitting the outside airto be drawn into the case a and to be conducted downward with the odors from the food. into the fire-pot and out through the chimney of the stove, by which arrangement smoke and odors are prevented from vitiating the air in the room in which the food is cooked.
In each end of the case a, I make a slot, a, that extends from the upper edge of said case to near its lower portion, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which slots serve for the purpose of introducing and supporting the swinging rack, which latter is shown in detail in Fig. 3. Said slots at (4 also serve for the purpose of admitting air to the interior of the case a, the
same as the perforations b b in the cover 12.
The rack is composed of a pair of wire or metal frames,O and D, hinged together on one side at x w, and provided on the opposite side with a suitable clasp or locking device, y, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. One of the rackframes,'O, has pivots c c in its two opposite ends, adapted to be introduced from above the case a into the slots at a, and to. rest in the lower portions of said slots during the operation of broiling or toasting. The pivots c c are extended beyond the case a in the form of cranks or levers c 0, by means of whichthe rack canbe turned around its axis half a revolution forward and back during the operation of broiling or toasting the food.
a a are handles or projections secured to opposite ends of the case a, which serve as stops or rcsts'for the cranks or levers o 0 when the rack is swung to the limit of its stroke in either direction. Said handles or project-ions a a also serve as means for lifting the case a from and to the stove.
O and D are longitudinal and parallel bars or wires on the respective rack-frames O and D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, said bars being preferably arranged parallel to the axis on which the rack is rotated, so as to retard and prevent the juices in the meat or food from running off too freely from the rack during the operation of broilingthe food.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secureby Letters Patent, and claim 1. The broiler-case a, having slots a a and stops or handles a a at its ends, and having the hinged or removable cover I), provided with one or more perforations, b b; in combination with the broiler having the cranked journals at its ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The case a, having perforated hinged or removable cover b, slots a a, and handles or projections a a, combined with the rack composed of frames 0 D, hinged together. and having longitudinal bars ,or wires 0 D, locking device y, pivots c c, and cranks or levers c c, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 23d day of De;
cember, A. D. 1886.
' JOHN BATTIS. Witnesses:
ALBAN Annnfsn, E. J. TORREY.
