Description

NOV. 21, 1939. J R. SUNDEEI I 2,180,885
JEWELRY BOX Filed Oct. '7, 1937 Patented Nov. 21, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JEWELRY BOX Application October 7, 1937, Serial No. 167,723
9 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in jewelry boxes of the type designed more particularly for the display of wrist watches and the like.
It has for its chief object to provide a display block for jewelry boxes which is so designed and constructed as to effectively display and accommodate the various types and sizes of bands,
. straps or bracelets of wrist watches.
Other features of the invention reside in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and. particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrist watch display box embodying my invention. Figure 2 is an enlarged central longitudinal section thereof. Figure 3 is a detached perspective view, partly in section, of the block to which the wrist watch is applied for display purposes. Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of such block.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The box structure proper may be of anyappropriate construction, that shown in the drawin consisting of a box body 10 having a cover ll hinged thereto and having a recess or well I 2 for removably receiving the lower portion of the wrist watch holder or block indicated genera ly by the numeral l3.
The holder or block I3 is adapted for ready insertion in and removal from the box body so that the watch to be displayed thereon may be applied to or removed from the holder when desired, the holder being further designed to accommodate wrist watches whose bands orstraps may be of varying sizes. In the preferred construction of the holder shown in the drawing. it consists of side walls I 4. l4 and a connecting top wall l5 which extends from a point short of the rear edges of the side walls and forwardly therefrom in a somewhat sloping fashion to a point adjacent the junction of the front and bottom edges of such walls. as shown in Figures 2 and 3. the whole resulting in a substantially hollow blockike structure which is open at its rear side 8 and its bottom side. The top wall l5 constitutes the display portion of the holder against which the watch itself rests while the bracelet ort on of the watch extends around the rear and bottom portions of the holder. This box-like holder may be made of a moldable or plastic composition of the pheno ic tyne. As seen in Fi ures 2. 3 and 4. the lower or substantially upright front portion of the top wall of the holder is notched as indicated at l6 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear and this top wall may be covered with velvet or other appropriate material, as indicated at IT.
In order to accommodate this block or holder to various sizes and styles of bands or bracelets used in connection with wrist watches and effect their neat display, I provide a yieldable or selfadjusting wall structure which is housed between the side walls 14 and depends from top wall I5 of the holder and which is so disposed as to enable 1 the Wrist watch band to contact therewith and to be tensioned more or less in accordance with the size of the band of a particular wrist watch intended to be displayed. For'this purpose, this yieldable wall consists of a metallic band or strip l8 of resilient material which is riveted or otherwisesecured intermediate its ends to the underside of the top wall l5 of the holder, as seen in Figure 2, and which is of a width substantially the same as that of the top wall I5. This band is substantially arch-shaped to provide a yieldable rear strap-engaging portion l9 and a front yieldable strap-engaging portion 20 which latter is disposed inwardly of and in contiguous relation to the adjoining portion of the top wall as clearly shown in Figure 3 (Like the block unit itself, this arch-shaped band may have its end portions covered with velvet or like material and in the case of the rear portion l9 thereof it may be covered with the same piece of velvet or like material which extends over the top wall l5 of the holder.
When a chain, cord or other narrow type of bracelet is applied to this holder, its front portion is adapted'to enter the notch IS in the lower portion of the top wall l5 of the holder and depending upon the wrist-size or diameter of the bracelet the two extensions I9, 20 of the resilient band l8 are flexed toward each other to exert an outward tension on the bracelet, and the latter is then'clasped in. the usual way. thereby resulting in the snug application of the wrist watch to the holder and insuring a neat and tidy display thereof. In the case of a leather or other wide band type of bracelet. the same extends at its lower end in straddling fashion over the notch l6 and contacts with the flexible portions of the res lient strip l8. the latter being self-adjusting and being contracted more or less depending upon the particular size of the wrist watch band. By this construction various types and sizes of wr st watches may be displayed, from the smallest size wrist bands to the largest size. thereby eliminating the expense of different size holders for the different sizes and types of bracelets borne by wrist watches.
I claim as my invention:
1. A display device for wrist watches and the like, comprising a substantially hollow, blocklike member having side walls and a top wall, the latter constituting a support for the watch and the adjoining ends of its attaching band, and a resilient member secured to the underside of said top wall and having depending band-engaging portions'arranged within and adjoining the front and rear ends of said block-like member.
2. A display device for wrist watches and the I like, comprising a substantially hollow, blocklike member having side walls and a top wall, the latter constituting a support for the watch and the adjoining ends of its attaching band and being provided at one end thereof with a notch with which a narrow type of band is adapted to register, and a resilient member secured to the underside of said top wall and havingdepending band-engaging portions adjoining the front and rear ends of said block-like member, said resilient member having a portion thereof in the plane of the top wall notch.
3. A display device for wrist watches and the like, comprising a substantially hollow, blocklike member having side walls and a topwall, the latter constituting a support for the watch and the adjoining ends of its attaching band, and a resilient member secured to, the underside of said top wall and providing pendant band-engaging portions, one of said portions forming a rear continuation of said top wall and the other portion being coextensive with and underlying the front portion of the top Wall.
4. A display device for wrist watches and the like, comprising a substantially hollow, blocklike member having side walls and a forwardlysloping top wall provided at its front end with a notch, and a resilient, substantially arch-, shaped member arranged within said block-like member and secured intermediate its ends to the underside of said top wall, a portion of said resilient member adjoining the forwardly sloping top wall and being disposed in the plane of its notch.
5. A display device for wrist watches and the like, comprising asubstantially hollow, blocklike member having side walls and a top wall, the latter constituting a support for the watch and the adjoining ends of its. attaching band, and a resilient member secured to the underside of said top wall and depending between said side walls and constituting a self-adjusting support for the remaining portion of the attaching band.
6. A display device for wrist watches and the like, comprising a substantially hollow, blocklike member having side walls and a top wall, the latter constituting a support for the watch and the adjoining ends of its attaching band, and a resilient member secured to the underside of said top wall and forming a substantial continuation thereof, and depending between said side walls and constituting a self-adjusting support for the remaining portion of the attaching band.
7. A display stand for wrist watches and the like, comprising opposite stiles and a top wall joining the stiles arranged to support and display a wrist watch in an inclined position, the top wall at one end and between the stiles having a depending flexible apron to tauten the wrist band of the watch when the same is embraced about said top and apron.
8. A display device for wrist watches and the like, comprising a substantially hollow, blocklike member having side walls and a top wall, the latter constituting a support for the watch and the adjoining inner ends of its attaching band, and a resilient member applied to the top wall of said block-like member and having an end portion pending therefrom between said side walls and constituting a resilient tongue with which the attaching band is engageable.
9. A display device for wrist watches and the like, comprising a substantially hollow, block-like member having side walls and a top wall, the latter constituting a support for the watch and the adjoining ends of its attaching band, and a resilient member applied to said block-like member in pendant fashion between said side walls and constituting a continuation of said top wall and a self-adjusting support for the remaining portion of the attaching band.
