This invention relates to display boxes and more particularly to a display box embodying a. holder or frame of novel construction for mounting and retaining for display purposes a wrist watch equipped with leather straps or bands of other suitable material.

It was early recognized that buckling the leather straps of a wrist watch in a display box prior to its sale was undesirable because of the tendency of the straps to become set in a deformed or unnatural position and to become scarred or creased due to their tight frictional engagement with the buckle in passing therethrough. The straps were buckled in the display boxes in order to retain the watch in secured position and thus us prevent their inadvertent detachment therefrom. To avoid the necessity of buckling the straps and their consequent disfigurement which detracted from their appearance, various types of display pads and holders have been devised and used commercially, but for one reason or another they neither proved satisfactory nor acceptable. Some holders were of such complicated construction that mounting of a wrist watch and its attached straps thereon and its removal therefrom were not readily accomplished, while others were deficient in their ability to retain the watch and straps against inadvertent detachment. Some holders also proved undesirable because a great percentage of the straps were concealed from view and thus defeated the prime purpose of the box and holder which was the display of the entire article offered for sale.

It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide an improved display box for wrist watches and other articles of jewelry.

Another object of the invention is to provide a wrist watch display box comprising a novel and improved type of holder or frame therefor and upon which a wrist watch and its attached straps may be readily and securely mounted and readily removed therefrom.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved type of holder or frame for a display box upon which a wrist watch or other article of jewelry, having attached straps, may be securely mounted without requiring the buckling together of the straps so as to cause permanent deformation or marring of the straps.

Still another object is to provide an improved type of holder or frame for a display box upon which a wrist watch, or other article of jewelry, having attached straps, may be mounted for display purposes without concealing any portions of 2 the watch or other article or any portions of the attached straps.

A still further object is to provide a wrist watch display box having an improved type of holder or frame comprising means for engaging and retaining the buckle of one wrist watch strap so that the straps may be pulled tight and the free end of the other strap passed over the buckle and through the keepers on the said one section of strap.

Other and further objects and advantages will become apparent as this description progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the improved jewelry display box comprising the present invention showing a wrist watch and attached strap securely mounted in display position on the holder thereof; and

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same but with the wrist watch and attached strap drawn in broken lines for the sake of clarity.

The display box shown in the drawing comprises generally a body or base portion Ill, a cover or lid ll hinged to the base portion, and a holder or frame I2 mounted within the base portion. The base portion 10 has a continuous circular upstanding wall [3 comprising its front and side walls and also has a straight rear wall M where it is hinged to the cover H. The cover I i has a similar shape and outline and is adapted to rest upon and coincide with the walls of the base portion 10 when in closed position. Secured to the bottom wall l6 of the base portion l0 adjacent to the front wall is an arcuately shaped and raised support I! having a front sloping portion l8 and a relatively flat top portion (9. The present invention, however, relates primarily to the article holder or frame 12, and. therefore it is apparent that the base portion and the cover of the box may assume any shape or design.

The article holder or frame I2 is mounted at its front central section on the upper surface of the flat top portion IQ of the raised support I! and extends rearwardly so as to occupy a substantially central position within the walls 13 and M of the box base in. The holder I? which is generally elliptical in shape and of a size substantially equivalent to that of a persons wrist, is formed from a curved vertically extending strip which is provided with an enlarged article-sup porting face 20 at its front central portion and the free ends 2| and 22 of which terminate short of each other forming a gap therebetween. The end 22 of the holder I2 is bent or doubled back straps 24 and 26 of conventional COIlStIllOtiOHr The strap 24 has a buckle 21 securedto its free end and also a pair of keepers or loops 28 throughwhich the free end of the strap 26 may be passed. To mount the watch 23 on th holdert2, the

strap buckle 2'! is first insertedtfirou'gh the-gap" between the free ends of the holder l2 and over and in interengagement with theretaining lug or hook 22, after which the strap 24 is pulled around the outer vertical, curved surface or the holder l2 so that the watch 23 is properly position'e'd against the enlarged section 20 at the' front of the holder. The strap 25 isthen extend.- ed around the other curved side of the holder l2 and its free. end is passed over or rearwardly of the buckle 27 and-then through strap retaining membersv or keepers 28, thus bye-passing the buckle 21 contrary to the ordinary manner of bucklingthe straps together,

The-keepers 28 are of such restricted size, particularly when new and unworn, as to frictionally engage the free end of the strap-ZG'and thus serve to maintain the watch 23 and its attached straps 24 and- 26 in tight frictional engagement with the outer vertical face of the holder |2.- Because of the inter-engagement betweenthe buckle 21 and the hooked lug 22 of the holder 12, no slippage results as the free end of thestrap 25 is pulled tightly through the keepers 28. Thus, itis apparentthat wrist watch and its attached straps may be readily and securely mounted on the holder I? with a minimum expenditure of time and efiort, and that its disengagement and removal therefrom may be effected with equivalent ease in the event a prospective purchaser or wearer of the watch desires to try it on. When play box may be handled in the ordinary manner without causing the watch to become inadvertently loosened or disengaged therefrom.

It is to be noted further that since the strap 26 is not passed through the buckle 21 so as to become interengaged therewith in the normal, intended manner, but passes thereover and directly into and through the keepers 28, the strap is in no way deformed'or marred by tight frictional engagement with the buckle or any other part of the holder l2; The straps of the watch may remain in the mounted and secured position above-described for a long period of time without becoming set in deformed position and without having permanent creases or scars made in the relatively soft polished surface of the leather by'the buckle. Consequently, the straps 24 and 26, because of the novel manner of mounting on the holder i2 and because 'of the ease with which they may be engaged and disengaged with the holder, never become shopworn in appearance. Over a long period offrequent handling for demonstration to prospective purchasers, the straps retain their new, unmarred appearance and, consequently, no price concession needbe made to compensate for the worn appearance.
