WATCH BOX Filed April 25, 1956 H Fla. 2,
FIG.5, 3
sucrtflvfimif A A Patented May 9, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WATCH BOX corporation of Ohio Application April 25,
4 Claims.
Thisinvention relates to watch display boxes and especially such boxes for wrist or strap watches in which Wrist or strap watches are supported in a resilient shock-proof manner and protected from dust, etc., and which boxes, when opened, provide a display for the watch so supported.
It is an object of my invention to provide a box for strap or wrist watches, in which means is provided for resiliently supporting the watches to prevent injury thereof, during transit, due to shock and wherein the watches are supported resiliently within a rigid box and in spaced relation therefrom, the rigidity of the box preventing injury of the watches due to crushing of the box and the resilient support of the watch in spaced relation with respect to the box preventing injury of the watches, due to the transmission of shock thereto from the rigid box.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a box which will, when opened, provide an attractive display for the supported watch.
It is a further object of my invention to provide means in such a box for supporting a strap or wrist watch in substantially the same manner as it will be supported upon the wrist of a wearer.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a casing and display which may be used after the purchase of the contained watch, either as a dust-proof case for the watch when not in use, or as a support therefor to be placed on an article of furniture such as a dresser or night table and which, when so placed, will support the watch in such a manner as to present the face for facility of telling time.
It is a further object of my invention to provide supporting means in such a case, about which a strap watch may be placed in any one of a plurality of positions about the circumference of the support in order that the position of the watch face may be widely varied for facilitating the reading of the time indicated thereby.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a rigid case having padded inner side members to prevent injury of the supported watch due to contact therewith.
These and other advantages will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of the box, closed;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the structure of Figure 1;
1936, Serial No. 76,356
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the box, as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the box, opened;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the box, opened as in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of the box, half opened, the back portion of the box being in closed position and the position of the supported watch being indicated in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the base I is made of any suitable material and has rigid ly secured thereto by means of an upstanding flange 2, a support 3 which is substantially in the shape of the letter C and which is preferably fashioned from resilient material, such as spring steel. The members I, 2 and 3 are preferably covered with suitable material such as velveteen for the sake of appearance and the prevention of scratching or marring of the watch supported thereon. The base i is suitably supported and rigidly secured to a sub-base 4, to which is hingedly secured, by means of fabric hinges or the like, at opposite sides thereof, a pair of substantially identical annular front and back members, generally designated 5 and 6 respectively. To the front member 5 is secured one part 1 of a snap fastener, while the other part 8 is secured by means of a strap 9 to the back member 6. The front member 5 and back member 5 are otherwise identical. each comprise fiat faces I!) having upstanding substantially vertically disposed flanges ll secured to the arcuate portions of their circumferences. The flanges are integrally secured to the fiat faces It. The front and back members 5 and 6 and the sub-base 4 are provided with a suitable covering secured to their outer surfaces, the inner annular surfaces of the flanges ll being covered in a like manner. Suitable padding is preferably provided on the interior surface of each flat face ll] in order to prevent damage to a watch supported by the support 3 due to sidewise movement or vibration of the support 3 with respect to the back and front members 5 and 5 when the case is closed, the members 5 and 6 being then secured together by means i, 8 and 9.
As will clearly appear from the drawing, the flanges ll of the front member 5 and back member 6 are inwardly directed and closely contact one another when the case is closed, as is shown in Figures 2 and 3. Disposed around the outer peripheral portions of the flanges H and adapted to be supported in channels in the outer surface of each flange H is a metallic hoop The members 5 and 6 or band l2, which has the ends l4 thereof tightly crimped about the downwardly exposed end extremities of the respective flanges II, as shown particularly in Figure 4. These bands extend over the covering of the members 5 and 6 and tend to retain the coverings tight on the members and also to provide added rigidity for the members 5 and 6. The resilient support 3 has the exterior surface thereof spaced inwardly from the flanges II, as shown in Figure 6. By means of this relationship, the watch supported on the member 3 is resiliently held in spaced relation from the flanges H of the rigid front member 5 and back member 8 when the members are held in closed position by the fastener means 1, 8 and 9.
Any damage due to sidewise vibration or movement of the member 3 with respect to the base I will be prevented by the padding of the inner surfaces of the flat faces H]. Furthermore, only the side frame portions of the watch will be exposed to or will contact with the padded flat faces l0. Due to the resiliency of the member 3, it will readily. accommodate strap watches of widely differing strap lengths, and furthermore the rigidity of the support of the strapwatch and the spacing thereof from the flanges ll of the front member 5 and back member 6 in the closed position of the case may be varied by adjustment of the length of the watch strap.
I have shown a substantially flattened portion H: on the member 3 for the accommodation of an elongated strap watch case, and it is to be understood that the size and shape of the member 3 may be widely varied in order to accommodate strap watches of different proportions and that the case is also susceptible of use as a display andcontainer for various other articles of jewelry, such as bracelets or the like. For accommodation of watch straps of extreme thickness, or of such chains, bracelets or the like, the length of the upstanding flange 2 will be varied, as desired.
It is to be understood that the above description and the illustration in the drawing is merely illustrative and in no wise limiting and. that the shape, contour and proportions of the various parts of my case are subject to wide variance in' the practice of my invention, and it will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications ascome within the scope of the claims and the invention.
When I refer to case, I refer to the box of this invention and not to a watch case. I use the two terms interchangeably.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
