Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
SAMUEL GRUMP, OF MONT CLAIR, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT lN PROCESSES 0F APPLYING POWDERED PASTE TOlABELS.
Specifieationforming part of Letters Patent No. 217,994, dated July 29, 1879 application filed May 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL GRUMP, of Mont Clair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Processes of Applying Gums or Dry Paste to Labels and other articles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved process of applying gums or dry pastes to labels, tickets, and other articles of manufacture that are used in a manner analogous to labels.
It consists in applying a powdered gum or dry paste in substantially the same manner as bronze powder is applied in printing.
A sizing of any material that will cause the gum or dry paste to adhere to it is applied by means of a press, stencil, or other suitable means in any convenient form or manner, the sizing being applied to cover such parts of the label or article as it is desired to have fastened to or upon the object or material to or upon which the label or article is to be used, the sizing being printed or placed upon such portions as may be desired and asmay be necessary to effectuate the proper adhesion of the label or article.
After the sizing has been applied or printed any dry pulverized gum or paste is brushed, sifted, or sprinkled upon it. The gum or paste adheres to the sizin g, and is dampened by means of a brush or otherwise, and the label or article attached to or upon the material or object in connection with which it is to be used.
The distinctive novelty of the invention consists in the application of the sizing by means of a press, stencil, or other means, and the sprinkling, brushing, or sifting upon it of the dry gum or paste.
By the means I have described I am enabled to avoid a number of inconveniences that are incidental to the customary application of gum or paste while it is in a damp or moist state.
By my process the warping of the-label or article and consequent injury, defacement, and inconvenience are prevented, the adhesive qualities of the surface that is to be applied to the article or material are enhanced, and other desirable results effected.
I propose to practice my invention in the fabrication of labels, tickets, pictures, scrapbooks, postage-stamps, and all articles generally which are fastened to other articles or materials by means of gums, pastes, and analogous substances.
Due regard will, of course, be had to the color of the sizing and gum or dry paste, especially where the label or other article is transparent or intended to be used as a translucent object or material.
In the application of the sizing the same rules will be observed in respect to the place or places of application and the proportion of the surface to be covered as are observed in the application of moist gums or pastes as now generally practiced, covering the whole surface or localized, as may be required.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described process of forming an adhesive surface upon labels and other articles, consisting in applying a sizing of suitable material to the whole or a part or parts of the surface of the label or other article, and sprinkling, sifting, or otherwise applying upon it a powdered gum or dry paste, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in process of applying gums or dry paste to labels and other articles, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of May, 1879.
