GEORGE E. BUZZA, OF M TENTH OFFICE.
INNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
PARGHMENT MOTTO AND GREETING CARD AND PROCESS OF MAKING THE SAME.
Application filed December To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. B'UZZA, a citizen of the United States residing at ltlinneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements ,in Parchment Mottoes and Greeting Cards and Processes of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to parchment mottoes and greeting cards, and the process of making the same. Prior to the time of my invention, it was impossible to satisfactorily manufacture articles of this character from sheet parchment material due to the fact that sheet parchment has a very high co efiicient of expansion, and, therefore, ex pands and contracts greatly when subjected to variations in temperature so that when printed upon in two or more colors by the ordinary method of printing, the successive printings are not properly disposed with relation to each other. Even a slight variation in temperature is enough to cause one or more of the printings to be thrown out of proper position on the parchment sheet. An object of my invention is to produce an artistic article of this character having all of the printings properly positioned upon the sheetparchment. I accomplish the object of my invention by heating the parchment material to a predeterniined temperature, and then printing it in a room which is maintained at this predetermined temperature. The ink employed in printing is also kept at the predetermined temperature. I have found that the adoption of this method results in the production of parchment mottoes and greeting cards having the printing properly positioned with the utmost degree of nicety.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description, and the novel features of my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
The single view of the accompanying drawing represents a multi-color card made in accordance with my process.
Referring to thisview, the numeral 10 designates a card or sheet of parchment paper which is made "from fibrous material 3, 1923. Serial No. 678,118.
mixed with glycerine. The fibrous material preferably consists of cotton rags.
Referring to the different colors represented on the card, a bronze background 13 shown at 12, apink flower is represented by the numeral 14, green leaves at 16, and the blue edged wings of a butterfly by the numeral. 18. In carrying out my process,
the parchment material is heated to a pretimes while the process is being carried out.
For bronzing an unprinted portion of the card, as for borders or backgrounds such as the background 12 shown in the drawing, sizing is first applied to the portion which is to be bronzed, it being understood that the sizing may be applied in any desired pattern or design. Bronze powder is then dusted on the card which is thereafter subjected to a brushing action which removes the powder from all places which have not been sized and at the same time polishes or burnishes the powder retained by the-sizing so that a brilliant goldlike appearance is imparted to the design or portion which has been imprinted with the sizing.
I claim:
1. The process of making parchment mottoes and greeting cards which consists in heating sheet parchment material to a predetermined ten'iperature, printing said material in a room maintained at said predetermined temperature, drying the printed sheet, applying sizing to an unprinted portion of said material, dusting bronze powder on said material, and brushing the applied. powder to remove surplus and to polish the powderretained by said sizing.
2. The. process of making parchment mottoes and greeting cards which consists in heating sheet parchment material to a presaid material, dusting bronze powder on determined temperature, printing said masaid material, and brushing the applied terial in different colors by successive printpowder to remove surplus and to polish 10 ings in a room maintained at said predeterthe powder retained by said sizing.
5 mined temperature, allowing the-applied ink In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my to dry 'betweenwthe successive printings apignature- I i. plying sizing to an unprinted portion of GEORGE E. BUZZA.
