<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Le National Starch Resyn 25-1103 est une émulsion d'acétate de vinyle et sert de revêtement adhésif;
Le Penford Gum 280 est un empois de maïs hydroxyéthylé, à basse viscosité, et sert de revêtement adhésif;

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Method and apparatus for the application of clay coatings to underlays of paper or the like as well as products conforming to those obtained.
The invention relates to a method for applying clay coatings to base layers of paper or the like by a carrier process plate method and apparatus. More particularly, the invention relates to the production of clay coatings which are remarkably free of lines and which allow coatings which have a greater weight per unit area of base coat. It is known that a major problem with applying water-based clay coatings to paper surfaces using conventional carrier blade methods is that the relatively straight edge of the blade
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
retains particles from the coating, or the sheet of paper or the canvas, resulting in surface streaking.
The grooves increase with the flexibility of the support. In addition, the maximum possible coating weights in most cases with a rigid board are limited to about 10 to 13 g per m2 of coating material.
The object of the invention is a method for producing a clay coating on a base layer of paper, or the like, characterized by applying an aqueous coating slurry to the base layer, moving the coating over the base layer. base layer between a rubber coated backing roll and a flexible resilient blade, having a curved portion behind a leading edge, the backing roll being arranged so as to come into contact only with the curved surface of the blade through the coating of the backing layer.
The invention overcomes the drawbacks of a conventional device, so as to produce more flexible coatings of the order of 5 to 25 g of solid coating per m2 of paper and moreover it allows the application of a second clay coating (on top of a first coating of previously dried clay) in a double coating process.
The invention also extends to a device for applying the above method or the like.
This device comprises the curvature or bending of the carrier blade and bringing the curved portion thereof into contact with the support cylinder on which the product to be coated passes, by a single passage, to go to a furnace. drying or to another coating station. The product or the coated base layer then passes between the support cylinder
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and the blade with the base layer coating surface resting against the curved surface rather than against the edge of the blade.
Preferably and often depending on the equipment available, the part of the load-bearing blade which is not curved or which is straight, and which is fixed in a rigid support, makes an angle of about 25 to 50 with the tangent to the support cylinder, at the point of contact with the carrier blade.
In addition, it is preferable that the blade is made of elastic steel or another flexible material, having a thickness of the order of 0.2 to 0.4 mm in the case of elastic steel (as in the examples c below), and the curved part is of the order of 1.9 to 4.4 m.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference will be made to the examples below and to the corresponding figure.
EXAMPLE 1.
A conventional rigid load-bearing treatment blade and a curved load-bearing treatment blade, according to the present invention, and as indicated by the drawing with reference, were used to apply two coatings of clay of different composition on top and. the underside of different examples of the same 0.2 mm cardboard cardboard and under the same operating conditions. The conditions and weights of the resulting coatings as well as the characteristics are given in Table 1.
All Ingredients in the coating composition can be purchased commercially and work as described below:
Hydranerse clay is a kaolin clay with medium-sized particles, to which a dispersant and a deflocculating agent have been mixed, and which serves as a pigment.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Dow Latex 630 is a styrene-butadfen emulsion and serves as an adhesive coating.
National Starch Resyn 25-1103 is a vinyl acetate emulsion and serves as an adhesive coating;
Penford Gum 280 is a low viscosity, hydroxyethylated corn starch and serves as an adhesive coating;
Kelgin Lv is a low viscosity sodium alginate and serves as a penetration control agent.
Calgon is sodium hexametaphosphate and serves as a dispersing agent.
Nopco ESI is a calcium stearate and serves as a lubricant and leveling agent.
Solar blue is a coloring material
Ammonia acts as a protein solvent and pH regulator.
The measurements appearing in table 1 show that ultimately the physical qualities and the impression of a coating produced by a curved blade are the same or better than those produced by a conventional installation.

EXAMPLE 11 A number of tests were carried out using a curved supporting treatment blade device according to the present invention, and covering the top or bottom with a different color. kinds of paper to see if variations in coating composition and operating conditions such as blade extensions, aisseurs, and angles to tangents to the support rolls at the point of blade contact were changing the weights of the blades. coatings. The results of these tests are summarized in Table II.
All of the components of the coating compound are commercially available and work as described in Example 1 or below:
Hydrafine clay, Ultrawhite 90 and Lustra clay are fine particle kaolin clays, with a dispersing agent and a deflocculating agent, these clays serving as pigments.
Roplex B-15 is an acrylic latex and serves as an adhesive coating.
Ethylex 2095 is a low viscosity, hydroxyethylated corn starch and serves as an adhesive coating.
Delta protein is soy protein.
Parex 613 is a melamine-formaldehyde resin and serves to render the coating insoluble.
Nopco C-104 is a calcium stearate and serves as a lubricant and leveling agent.
Colloid 581-B is a protective colloid that keeps clay in suspension.
Ivory soap flakes serve as lubricants and leveling agents.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
As indicated in Table II, the weights of the coatings produced using the present device are greater than those which could be obtained using conventional means.
