Electron multipliers ructed uration which eifect which is far theory. This eifect ny luminous excitaesome greater than that foreseen in exists in the absence of a .tion. I
The present invention enables this drawback It has been of electrons in these surnal axis of the amplifying system.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which Figs. 1 and 2 show two embodiments of the invention in perspective views,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified device according to Fig. 1,
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate two ad ments in cross-sections, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modification of Fig. 2.
The amplifier comprises a bulb B within which the first photo-electric cathode K1, Fig. 1, receives the outer light and the electrons emitted are attracted by an electric field existing between the upper plate R1 and the cathode. Any known means such as M1 M2 produce a magnetic field perpendicular to the path of the electrons, which magnetic field ben ditional embodiondary elecment is repeated several followi nections N1, N2,
The improve cathodes K1, R1 R2 R3 etc.
A kind of conducting tube C3,
arranged entirely surrounding system. Said auxiliary electrode ducting tube can be placed outsid plifier (see Fig. ty of the tube its containing the am mediate proximi tact with same.

auxiliary lateral electrodes are divided into a plurality of sections C'1 C"1 C'2 C": raised to suit to the successive catho Q1, etc., and F1, F2, etc
It has been found on th harmful effects decrea electrodes K1 K2 R1 R2.

A complementary improvement enables the surface of the first cathode to be consists in placing inside the jacent the upper electrode, length L (see Figs. 3 and optical system which,

What I claim is:
derably reduced: it 4 tube itself and ada lens of short focal 6) or any appropriate when it is outside the placed sufliciently near 1. An electron multiplier tube comprising a succession of cathodes,
mg electrodes parallel a succession of acceleratto said cathodes, and
auxiliary electrodes adapted to be raised to a lower potential than th cathodes, said auxiliary ed on either side of said ing electrodes and closi group of cathodes and the group of accelerating electrodes. .2. An electron multiplier tube comprising a succession of cathodes, a succession of accelerat- 5 ing electrodes parallel to said cathodes, and two auxiliary half-tubular electrodesadapted to be raised to a lower potential than that of the first of said cathodes, said auxiliary electrodes surrounding said cathodes and, accelerating electrodes and closing the space between the group of cathodes and the group of accelerating electrodes.
3. An electron multiplier tube comprising a succession of cathodes, a succession of accelerating electrodes parallel to said cathodes, and two groups of auxiliary electrodes mounted respectively on either side of said cathodes and accelerating electrodes and closing the space between the group of cathodes and the group 0! accelerating electrodes, each of said auxiliary electrodes being adapted to be raised to a lower potential than the potential of the cathode which is adjacent same.
4. An electron multiplier tube comprising a succession of cathodes, a succession of accelerating electrodes parallel to said cathodes, and two auxiliary electrodes adapted to be raised to a lower potential than that of the first of said cathodes and mounted on either side of said cathodes and accelerating electrodes, outside said tube, for maintaining all the electrons in their path from one cathode to the following cathode. 5. An electron multiplier tube comprising a succession of cathodes, a succession of accelerating electrodes parallel to said cathodes, auxiliary electrodes mounted on either side of said cathodes and accelerating electrodes and closing the space between the group of cathodes and the group of accelerating electrodes, said auxiliary 1 electrodes being adapted to be re ed to a lower potential than the potential of the first cathode, and an optical system mounted within said tube adjacent the first of said cathodes to concentrate light on said first cathode.
6. An electron multiplier tube comprising a succession of cathodes, a succession of accelerating electrodes parallel to said cathodes, two groups of auxiliary electrodes mounted respectively on either side of said cathodes and accelerating electrodes and closing the space between the group of cathodes and the group oi accelerating electrodes, each of said auxiliary electrodes being adapted to be raised to a lower potential than the potential of the cathode which is adjacent same, and an optical system mounted within said tube adjacent the first of said cathodes to concentrate light on said first cathode.
7. An electron multiplier tube comprising a succession of cathodes, a succession of accelerating electrodes parallel to the said cathodes and auxiliary electrodes mounted on either side of and perpendicularly to said cathodes and accelerating electrodes and being adapted to be raised to a suitable potential to maintain all the electrons in their path from one cathode to the following cathode.
8. An electron multiplier device comprising a container, a succession of cathodes and a succession of accelerating electrodes parallel to the said cathodes in said container, and auxiliary electrodes mounted outside said container on either side of and perpendicularly to said cathodes and accelerating electrodes and being adapted to be raised to a suitable potential to maintain all the electrons in their path from one cathode to the following cathode.
