Abstract

836,008. Cathode-ray tubes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 26, 1956 [April 27, 1955], No. 12886/56. Class 39(1). A " flat " cathode-ray tube of the type described in Specifications 794,257 and 801,841 in which an electron beam is deflected out of a plane parallel and adjacent to the fluorescent screen into impingement with it, is adapted for colour television by providing colour strips on the screen. In Fig. 5 two colour strips 69, 70 are on one side of a transparent support plate 66, the other surface of the plate is coated with a transparent third colour 68. Two beams 64, 65 travel parallel to the top edge of the screen and are deflected by horizontal sweep deflection plates 67 to either side of the screen. Focusing and accelerating plates 71, 72; 71a, 72a are provided for each beam. Transparent plates 73, 74 provide the vertical sweep deflectors. Two sets of grids 75, 76 adjacent the colour strips 69, 70 form electrostatic lenses for supplementary focusing and registration. A single gun may replace guns 62, 63 ; the single beam is switched to either side of the screen. In alternative embodiments, three sets of colour strips may be provided, all on one side of the screen, the focusing and registration grids may or may not be provided, and a single gun 114, Fig. 8, may direct the beam 117 towards the screen instead of along one edge. Plates 115 provide the horizontal sweep, and plates 118, 119 the vertical sweep. Plates 116 switch the beam from one side of the screen to the other. Light filters may be used in association with fluorescent material emitting polychromatic light.
