UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. HARPER, OF EL PASO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASES FOR STOVE S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,793, dated July 22, 1879; application filed October 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. HARPER, of El Paso, in the county of VVoodford and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bases for Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a bottom plan of my base for stoves; and Fig. 2 is a side-elevation view of the same.
My invention relates to the bases or bottoms of stoves, affording easy and ready means for transporting the stove from one room or place to another, and turning the same with expenditure of but little strength, and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
Upon the bottom surface of the base is cast dovetail socket-s, two at a point slightly at one side of the center, and one on the opposite end. By this arrangement the stove will nearly balance on the two rollers which are near the center, but little force being required to lift The dovetail sockets are adapted to receive rollers upon plates, the plates forming a neat fit in the sockets. The plane of the rollers is at right angles with the longitudinal plane of the sockets, thus avoidin g the danger of the rollers being displaced.
My invention is peculiarly adapted to the use of the stove-merchant, who has frequent need to move stoves in the store.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the stove-base; a, the leg-bearing; B, the rollersockets, arranged as shown; and O c the rollers on plate 0.
.In Fig. 2 the end of the store having the single roller is elevated, and the ease with which it could be turned on the two center wheels is obvious.
The center wheels are designated by the letters c c, and the end single wheel by O.
The stove rests 011 the rollers only when the legs are out.
I am aware that a stove-leg constructed with 'a rigid foot, and provided with a caster located above the base of the foot, has been used, whereby the caster will only rest upon the floor when the stove is tilted. Two of these legs have been employed, and by lifting upon the front of the stove it could be trundled about upon the casters. 1 am also aware that stove-lcgs located at the four corners of a rectangular stove-base have been provided with casters; and that a circular stove-base has been provided with rollers arranged in a triangular form at the edge of the base. None of these constructions, however, is sought to be covered in this application.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The base A, having sockets a for the ordinary removable stove-legs, and the sockets B for the removable plates 0 provided with the rollers 0, two of said rollers a being located at opposite sides of the base so as to nearly balance the stove, and the third roller being located at the center of the front edge of the base, combined and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. HARPER.
Witnesses WILLIAM R. WILLIS,
