DEVICE FOR STERILIZING SAFETY RAZORS AND BLADES Filed Aug. 9, 1937 Jr INVENTOR MARCUS BORIS STROCK Y Mm m ATToR/vn' Patented Oct. 31, 1939 UNITED STATES DEVICE FOR STERILIZING SAFETY RAZORS AND BLADES Marcus-Boris Strock, Liverpool, England I Application August 9,
1937, Serial No. 158,249
In Great Britain May 27, 1937 1 Claim.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and cheaply constructed holder device or hand appliance for use in compactly assembling and firmly holding the parts of a safety razor, with blade in position, preparatory to placing the assembly (i. e., holder device and razor parts) into a receptacle containing sterilizing or disinfecting liquid, the compact mode of assembling the razor parts permits a small receptacle to be used and yet enables the razor parts to be easily removed and connected for use from time to time, and this without necessity for removal of the blade from between its cover and guard plates.
Broadly, a device for the purpose indicated and according to my invention consists of a base which carries retaining means for firmly holding the cover and guard plates of a safety razor with interposed blade such that the same may be readily removed as a unit, and means on said base for separately securing the detached handle of the safety razor in parallel disposition relative to and in close proximity with the cover and guard plates when positioned.
According to one simple mode of construction said device comprises a base, two uprights spaced apart and extending upwardly from said base, one of said uprights being formed with a longitudinal slot open at its upper end for the purpose of permitting the handle and blade-locating projections on the cover plate to be accommodated when the cover and guard plates of the safety razor with interposed blade are positioned as a unit between said uprights, and a screw-threaded pin secured to and extending upwardly from said base whereon the handle of the safety razor may be separately secured in an upright position.
The space between said uprights may be such that when the handle of the safety razor is disconnected, subsequent to the cover and guard plates with interposed blade being positioned between the uprights, the flattening out of the blade from its flexed position moves and holds the cover and guard plates in retaining abutment with adjacent uprights.
The holder device with razor parts in position may be placed inside a receptacle containing sterilizing or disinfecting liquid and fitted with a removable cap adapted to seal an open end of said receptacle.
I will further describe my invention with the aid of the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings which illustrate, by way of example only, one mode of carrying my invention into eifect.
In said drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front view,
Fig. 2 a side elevation, and
Fig. 3 a plan view, of a device constructed in accordance with my invention for use in compactly assembling and firmly holding the parts of a safety razor, with interposed blade, preparato-ry toplacing the assembly into a receptacle containing sterilizing or disinfecting liquid.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the safety razor with interposed bladeas when the safety razor is in use-placed loosely between spaced upright plates of the holder device.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a further plan view showing the handle of the safety razor partly unscrewed to cause the razor blade to flatten out from its flexed position so as to move the cover and guard plates into abutment with adjacent upright plates of the device whereby the cover andguard plates and blade become firmly held thereon.
Fig. '7 is a side elevation showing the handle of the safety razor completely detached from the cover and guard plates of the safety razor and fitted separately onto the device, the whole assembly being shown inserted into a receptacle containing disinfectant fluid.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of Fig. '7, the receptacle being shown in section.
In the several views like characters of reference denote like or equivalent parts wherever they occur.
Referring to the drawing, the device includes a base plate, designated a, which may be provided on its underside with small studs or foot rests b, b and on its upper side there is securely mounted two upright plates 0, c suitably spaced apart one of which, i. e., plate c is preferably somewhat longer than the other and contains a longitudinal slot c which is open at its upper end. Also secured on said base plate a is a short screw-threaded pin d of such size as to be engageable with the usual screw-threaded socket of a handle 2 of an ordinary safety razor when detached and fitted thereto. A reduced lower end of pin d which secures the latter and passes through base plate a may constitute the foot rest 12.
In applying a safety razor with blade and handle in situ to my device, according to the preferred mode of usage, the handle a of the safety razor is held by the hand and the razor assembly, i. e., cover plate 7, flexible blade g and guard plate h, is passed downwardly between said upright members 0, c --as in Fig. 4the bladelocating projections f and handle 2 of cover plate 1 being accommodated in the slot c --which is shaped for this purpose-of said slotted plate The space between the uprights c, c is such that when the handle e is partly unscrewedas in Fig. 6-after the safety razor has been initially positioned-as in Figs. 4 and 5--the spring action of the blade g in returning from flexed to flat position causes the cover and guard plates h, respectively, to move apart and firmly holds the same in retaining abutment with the adjacent uprights 0, 0 Then the handle e is completely detached from the screw-threaded pin f of cover plate 7 and screwed onto the corresponding screw-threaded pin 01 on the base plate a so as to be parallel and in close proximity with the positioned cover and guard plates. The whole razor assembly, with blade in position, may now be lifted and inserted by means of the handle e in a tin or other receptacle containing suitable sterilizing or disinfecting liquid until again required for use.
When wanted, the assembly is lifted from its container, again by means of the safety razor handle e, which is then disconnected from its anchorage d, on base plate a and reconnected with the screw-threaded pin f of cover plate 1: if the handle e is now screwed on tight the cover plate J and guard plate h will move inwardly free from the adjacent uprights c, 0 Whereupon the safety razor complete is now free to be slid upwardly by the aid of its reconnected handle e to release it from between said uprights c, 0 The handle e if necessary may be subsequently tightened to finally clamp the blade g rigidly between the cover plate I and guard plate h.
In a convenient mode of construction and as illustrated on the drawing, said spaced uprights c, c are formed out of a single piece of suitably bent sheet metal conveniently secured to base plate a by heads :i of foot rests b and it may be arranged that said upright plates 0, 0 shall have an inward spring tendency so as to ensure that the razor parts shall, when positioned, be held firmly until required for re-use. In another simple construction, said uprights c, c may be constituted by frames of appropriately bent wire extending upwardly from base a.
The device with compactly assembled razor parts may be snugly disposed in a small cylindrical receptacle 7cas shown in Figs. 7 and 8provlded with, say, a tightly fitting screwed lid or cover Z having wings 1 so as to be always ready for use in sterilized condition, and this without danger of the sterilizing liquid evaporating or being spilt.
My holder device may be constructed throughout of metal or any other suitable material.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device for use in compactly assembling and holding the parts of a safety razor with interposed blade preparatory to placing the assembly into a receptacle containing a sterilizing liquid comprising a base, uprights extending from said base and spaced apart a distance greater than the thickness of the assembled razor head when the blade is flexed, but less than the thickness of the assembled razor head when the blade is flat, one of said uprights being formed with a lcngitudinal slot open at its upper end for the purpose of permitting the handle and blade-loeating projections on the cover plate to be accommodated when said cover and guard plates of the safety razor with interposed blade are positioned as a unit between said uprights and a screw-threaded pin secured to and extending upwardly from said base whereon the handle of the safety razor may be separately secured in an upright position.
