ROBERT E. FISCHER AND ANDREW LIST, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
DENTAL FLOSS HOLDER.
Application filed October 29, 1928. Serial No. 671,422.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that RoBnRT R. FISCHER and ANDREW LIST, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakland. in the county of Alameda and State of California, have in? vented certain new and useful Improvement in Dental Floss Holders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improved dental floss holder adapted for use in holding the floss taut when the same is employed.
The object of our invention is to provide a novel means to hold the floss in a taut position in the bow, by binding the same between two platesthe upper plate being rotatably mounted upon the lower plate.
A further object is to provide a holder which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
In the annexed drawing in which our invention is illustrated:
Figure 1 is a plan view of our holder. Figure 2 1s a side view of the same. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of our holder.
Figure 4 is a side view of the holder showing the floss held in position.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of-Figure 2.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8 -8 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, a tubular container 1 has a cap 2 The bobbin of floss 3 rests loosely in the container 1. A plate 4 is rotatably mounted on the cap 2, by means of a bolt 5 extending through the cap and plate- A spring 6 is positioned around the bolt 5. and between the bottom of the cap 2 and a head 7 on the bolt. Thus the plate can yield slightly, the object of which will be further described. A bow 8 is secured to the plate 4 and extends upwardly therefrom, and a groove 9 is formed in the outer edge of the bow to serve as a guide for the floss.
The cap 2 is provided with two diametrically opposed slots 10 and 11-the slot 11 extending into the interior of the cap, while the slot 10 is formed in the periphery.
The plate 4 is provided with two diametrically opposed slots 12 and 13, the slot 13 being in alignment with the groove 9 in the bow 8.
A suitable cutter 14 is formed on the plate 4; to cut the floss after it has been used.
In operation the slots 10 and 12 and 11 and 13 are brought into juxtaposition. The floss from the bobbin 3 is threaded through the slots 11, 13, over the bow in the groove 9, through the slots 10, 12, and the end depends slightly below the plate 4. The plate 4 is now rotated a short distance and due to the yieldable feature of the spring 6, the plate presses upon the floss which is held between it and the cap 2.
Having described our .invention, we claim:
1. A dental floss holder com rising a container adapted to receive the oss, a cap on said container, a plate rotatably mounted on said cap, a bow formed on said plate, and
, means to hold the floss between said cap and said plate.
2. A dental floss holder comprising a container adapted to receive the'floss, a ca on said container, a plate rotatably mounted on said cap, a bow formed on said plate, said cap having diametrically opposed slots formed therein, said plate having diametrically opposed slots formed therein adapted to be placed in juxtaposition with the cap slots to release the floss, and to be rotated out of position, to clamp the floss.
3. A dental floss holder comprising a container adapted to receive the floss. a cap on said container, a plate rotatably mounted on said cap, a bow formed on said plate, said cap having diametrically opposed slots formed therein, said plate having diametrically opposed slots formed therein adapted to be placed in juxtaposition with the cap slots to release the floss, and to be rotated out of position to clamp the floss, a bolt extendingthrough said plate and said cap, and a spring surrounding said bolt and positioned between the head of the bolt and the cap.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
ROBERT R. FISCHER. ANDREW LIST.
