To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, WALTER ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Cigar Perforator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a cigar perforator.

It is well known that when the end of a cigar is out or bit olf, the wrapper frequently becomes unraveled and in smoking a cigar from which the end has been thuswise removed the saliva quickly penetrates and sat` urates the end of the cigar, a condition which is objectionable to the smoker.

It is an object of this invention to overcome the above-noted objections by providing a perforator in which the end of any cigar may be inserted and properly perforated, preferably in a longitudinal direction so it will not be necessary to remove the end thereof as has been commonly done in the ast. p This invention comprises the novel mechanism and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined inthe appended claim.k

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention, and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:

Figure l is a section through the cigar perforator showing a cigar inserted therein with the lower end in section.

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating a different position of the parts.

Referring now to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of this invention, it will be observed that the same comprises a base 1, preferably stamped from sheet metal or the like and having an annular ange for supporting the same, and an upper dished surface which is provided with a central socket 2 for receiving the shank 8 of a circular plug or member 4 from which a plurality of spaced perforating elements or needles 5 project in an upward direction. A large headed screw 4a may be screwed into the shank for securing the plug in position. A hollow cylindrical cigar guiding member 6 having an upper flaring mouth telescopes over the plug or member 4, and may be secured thereto in any appropriate way. In the illustrated embodiment of this invention, the plug 4 is provided with external screw threads above a lower annular shoulder 7, upon which the hollow cylindrical member 6 is removably screw threaded.

A s lidably vsupported apertured or ring member 8 lits within the hollow cylindrical member 6 and rests upon a yielding cushioning element 9 in the form of a coil spring confined between the plug member 4 and the ring member 8 which is constrained in an upward direction by an annular internal sbhoulder l0 of the hollow cylindrical mem- In using this cigar perforator, the proper end of the cigar is inserted into the flaring mouth of the cylindrical member 6 and through the ring member 8 which may be properly chamfered for this purpose, as shown in Figure l. Then by pressing slightly upon the cigar the ring member will be forced downwardly against the spring allowing the perforating needles to properly perforate the end of the cigar while the same is securely confined from bursting or tearing or the like by the ring member 8.

Of course, it is obvious that the device embodying my invention can be suitably secured to any suitable tray or stand or may be used independently thereof, as desired- I therefore have merely shown one method of attaching the device to a tra-y and other methods will readily suggest themselves to one skilled in the art. I am aware that-numerous other details of construction may be varied though a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:
