This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a head and tail ornament for pocketbooks.

More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a pocketbook characterized by a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook and having a means for releasibly supporting head and tail ornaments upon the side portions thereof.

Another object of this invention is to form the frame sections of channel shaped material in cross sections and to form the head and tail ornaments with studs which are adapted to be 1! engaged through aligned bayonet openings formed in the side portion of the frame sections, and a strip which is slidably supported within the side portion of the frame section and which is adapted to be moved to a position in which it will clamp ,m the headed studs in position between the bayonet slots for holding the head and tail ornaments in position.

Another object of this invention is to form a pocketbook which has the head and tail ornaments securely attached to the sides thereof.

Still furtherit is proposed to construct a pocketbook which has an ornament associated with the mouth opening and which is securely attached thereto for ornamental purposes only.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the 35 invention are more particularly set forth.

The heads and tails ornament for ladies or childrens pocketbooks or bags, according to this invention}, comprises a pair of hingedly connected frame sections ID for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocket bag H. Each frame section Ill has side portions l0 of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon the edges H of the pocketbook proper. A strip 12 is slidably mounted in each side portion I0 and has a projecting portion I2 by which it may be moved. An ornamental body l3 for the outer side of the side portion has headed studs M which are adapted to engage through aligned bayonet openings formed in the strip l2 and the side portion l0. A means is provided for holding this strip in positions in which the bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasing the headed studs.

The frame sections H] are constructed of metal or other suitable material and the bottom ends of the side portions Ill are hingedly connected together at a point I5. The pocketbook proper is constructed of leather or similar material and has its edges ll around the mouth opening securely clamped between the edges of the channel shaped frame sections and those portions of the bag I l which are clamped between the arms of the channel members are securely attached together by means of stitches.

The top portions [0 of the frame sections ID are each provided with looking elements I 6 which are adapted to be engaged with each other for holding the pocketbook closed. The side of the pocketbook H is formed with a handle I! which has its ends ll securely attached to the side of the pocketbook by means of stitches IS.

The ornamental bodies l3 consist of a head l3 for one side of the pocketbook, and a tail ornament W for the other side of the pocketbook. These ornaments l3 are securely attached at their inner ends to members [9 which are formed with the headed studs M.

The intermediate portion of the channel shaped material from which the frame sections ID are formed have bayonet openings 20 having their larger ends 29 directed toward the top of the pocketbook and through which the enlarged head of the studs [4 are adapted to be passed. The strips l2 are slidably passed through slots 2! formed in a portion of the frame sections I U and are adapted to extend downward within the side portions of the frame sections. These strips I2 are also formed with bayonet openings 22 which have their enlarged ends 22 opposed to the enlarged openings of the bayonet openings 28 and which are adapted to be aligned with the enlarged openings 20 so that the enlarged heads of the stud l4 maybe passed through these bayonet openings.

A pin 23 extends from the inner wall of the frame sections l and is adapted to engage an elongated slot 26 formed in the strip l2 for assisting the slot 2! and the side arms of the side portions Ii! in holding the strip in position within the channel shaped material from which the frame sections are constructed.

The intermediate portion of the channel shaped material from which the frame sections are formed have recesses 25 in the vicinity of the lower end of the strip l2 and which are adapted to be selectively engaged by a projection 26 formed on the bottom end of the strip 42 for holding the strip in one or the other position and comprises the means for holding the bayonet slots in or out of line for holding and releasing the headed studs l4. Thus when the strip i2 is moved to the dot and dash position l2 shown in Fig. 6 the enlarged

20 and 22 of the bayonet opening 2E1 and 22 will be aligned so that the enlarged heads of the studs 14 may be passed therethrough for disengaging the ornaments l3 from the frame sections it.

When the strip I2 is moved to the position illustrated by the full lines in Fig. 6 the enlarged ends 29 and 22 of the bayonet openings will be out of line so that the narrow portions of these slots will engage the shank portion of the studs Hi and be disposed between the enlarged head and intermediate portion of the side portion Ill for fixedly holding the ornaments in position as desired.

According to the modification shown in Figs. 10 and 11 a pocketbook 20 constructed of leather or suitable materials is adapted to be closed by a flap 2i: attached to one side of the mouth opening of the pocketbook and which is formed with a snap fastener 21 which. is adapted to engage a complementary snap fastener on the adjacent face of the pocketbook proper. This bag is also formed with hingedly connected frame sections 22 which are engaged across the mouth openings of the pocketbook and a handle 23 having its ends 23 attached to the sides of the mouth opening of the bag for carrying the same.

Ornaments 2t in the form of a head 24* at one side of the bag and a tail 24* at the other side of the bag, have their inner ends inserted between the adjacent edges of the bag 20 and securely attached thereto by means of stitches 25. These ornaments 24 are formed from substantially the same material as the pocket bag proper and are stamped with the desired ornaments, such as eyes, mouth, ears, and the hair which forms the tail 24 Stufiing 26' is inserted between the adjacent layers of the ornaments 24.

According to the modifications shown in Figs. 12-14 inclusive, a pocketbook 30 having side walls 36* is formed with a handle 3| which has its ends 3P securely attached to one of the side walls 30 by means of stitches 32. Ornaments 33 are attached to the edge portions of the mouth opening of the bag 30 for adding to the decorative effect of the bag.

These ornaments 33 are in the form of fish or other objects and are formed along their length with slots 34. The upper ends 30 of the side walls 30 are adapted to be passed through the slots 3t and over the top of the ornament 33 and down behind the ornament into the inside of the bag 30. The adjacent faces of the end 30* and the side wall 30* are securely attached together by means of stitches 35. A means is provided for holding the mouth opening of the bag in its closed position.

A Zipper" 36 having a control slide 31 associated therewith is attached to the sides of the mouth opening of the pocket bag 30 and the control slide 31 is adapted to be moved along the length thereof for opening and closing the bag in the usual manner.

My invention relates to improvements of pocketbooks made in all sorts of decorative manners in the form of ornamental faces of animals understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to modifications in my new invention to use the same idea in the form of one solid piece chopped by dyes which is similar to the sketches, including materials for ornaments such as wood, glass, Bakelite, plastic rubber, shell, Celluloid and metals, also to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A heads and tails ornament for pocketbooks comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon the edges of the pocketbook proper, a strip slidably mounted in one side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an ornament body for the outer side of said side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strip and. said side portion, and means for holding said strip in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasing said headed studs.

2. A head and tail ornament for pocketbooks comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon the edges of the pocketbook proper, a strip slidably mounted in one side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an ornament body for the outer side of of said side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strip and said side portion, and means for holding said strip in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasing said headed studs, said frame sections having the bottom ends of their side portions pivotally connected together so that the top portions of said frame sections may be moved apart when it is desired to open said pocketbook.

3. A head and tail ornament for pocketbooks, comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon the edges of the pocketbook proper, a strip slidably mounted in one side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an ornament body for the outer side of said side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strip and said side portion, and means for holding said strip in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasing said headed studs, means on said frame sections for holding said pocketbook in its closed position.

4. A head and tail ornament for pocketbooks, comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon the edges of the pocketbook proper, a strip slidably mounted in one side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an ornament body for the outer side of said side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strip and said side portion, and means for holding said strip in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasing said headed studs, said projecting portion of said strip extending through an opening formed in said frame section at the top of said side portion, and said projecting portion being adapted to be moved outwards for aligning the enlarged ends of said bayonet openings so that said headed studs may be passed therethrough when it is desired toremove or place said ornament body on said side portion.

5. A head and tail ornament for pocketbooks, comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon the edges of the pocketbooks proper, a strip slidably mounted in one side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an ornament body for the outer side of said side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strip and said side portion, and means for holding said strip in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasing said headed studs, said means for holding said strip comprising an inwardly extending projection formed on the bottom of said strip and selectively engageable with complementary recesses formed in the adjacent face of said side portion for restricting the movement of said slide to positions in which said bayonet slots will be either in line or out of line.

A head and tail ornament for pocketbooks, comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon the edges of the pocketbook proper, a strip slidably mounted in one side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an ornament body for the outer side of said side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strip and said side portion, and means for holding said strip in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasingsaid headed studs, means for holding said strip in po-' sition within said side portion, comprising a pin extending inwards from said side portion and engageable through an elongated slot formed in said strip intermediate of its ends.

A head and tail ornament for pocketbooks, comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon edges of the pocketbook proper, a strip slidably mounted in each side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an ornament body for the outer side of each side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strips and side portions, and means for holding said strips in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of line for holding and releasing said headed studs.

8. A head and tail ornament for pocketbooks, comprising a pair of hingedly connected frame sections for engagement on the mouth opening of a pocketbook, each frame section having side portions of channel shape in cross section with the arms thereof adapted to be clamped upon edges of the pocketbook proper, a strip slidably mounted in each side portion and having a projecting portion by which it may be moved, an oranment body for the outer side of each side portion and having headed studs engaging through alignable bayonet openings in said strips and side portions, and means for holding said strips in positions in which said bayonet slots are in or out of' line for holding and releasing said headed studs, said ornament body for one side of said pocket bag comprising a head and the ornament body for the other side of said pocketbook comprising a tail.
