Description

M. S. DRAKE. Device for OarryingBo'oks, &c.
No. 217,350. Patented July 8,1879.
Mummies:
UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
MAHLON S. DRAKE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR CARRYING BOOKS, 800.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,350, dated July 8, 1879; application filed June 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,'MAHLON S. DRAKE, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Fastening and Binding Devices for Carrying Books or other Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices which are intended for securing books and packages together, and furnish a convenient means for a handle to carry the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawing, the figure shows a perspective view of a device embodying my invention.
A represents the handle; B B, the standards, which are rigidly secured together. The
lower portions of the standards are provided with curved bases a a, intended to fit over the article or articles to he carried, by which means the handle A and standards B B are held in an upright position when the article or articles are secured for carrying, always leaving plenty of room for the hand.
Near the lower portions of the standards B B are openings 11 b, which are for the purpose of allowing the cord 0 to pass through. This cordis in one piece, but is passed through the openings 1) b, leaving a loop, d, upon one end, through which the article or articles may be passed, when the opposite end of said cord is drawn up tightly around the package and tied in aknot, as shown at 0.
By this means a cheap and convenient device is produced for carrying articles, leaving room always for the hand, and furnishing a rigid handle.
I am aware that a cord has been heretofore used drawn through a hollow handle, and I do not claim such as my invention, as it accomplishes neither the object nor purpose of my invention; but,
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*-- 1. In a device for carrying books and other articles, the standards B B, having curved bases a a, and having the handle A rigidly secured thereto, in combination with the cord a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the handle A and standards B B, secured rigidly together, said standards being provided with the openings 1) b and curved bases a a, in combination with the cord 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I clain1 the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
" MAHLON S. DRAKE.
