Description
Patented Aug. 8, 1939 UNITED STATES DRAIN FITTlNG Gunnar B. Nystrom,
Cleveland, Ohio, assignor to The Republic Brass Qompany, Cleveland, Ohio,
a corporation of Ohio Application October 26, 1938, .Serial No. 237,048
1 Claim. (o1. 203) This invention relates to a plumbing fixture and more particularly to a drain fitting which is particularly adapted for use with a wash bowl or the like.
Drain fittings of this character heretofore constructed have the serious disadvantage in that much time and efiort are'consumed in assembling the unit, it being necessary to disassemble all of the parts in order to secure the unit to a bowl or tub.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a drain fitting of simple construction and which avoids the difiiculties mentioned.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drain fitting of the same general construction which is adapted to be secured in place or removed without any substantial disassembling of parts.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a drain fitting which comprises few parts which those skilled in the art.
The drain fitting proper consists of a one-piece hollow casting 5 having a straight portion 6 and an angularly disposed portion 1 communicating therewith. The straight portion of the casting is exteriorly threaded to the extreme upper edge thereof. The upper edge of the casting is provided with a valve seat 8 which is interiorly disposed. Fitting within the straight portion of the casting is a valve member 9 which is provided with radially disposed flanges l and II which serve to guide the valve member in the straight portion 6 of the casting. The valve proper is indicated by the reference character I 2 and when in the open position normally projects above the bottom of the bowl as shown in Fig. 1.
Threadedly secured over the top of the upper end of the drain fitting is a flanged ring member l3 which fits within a countersunk opening 2 provided in the bottom of the bowl, as shown The valve I2 is slightly tapered so as to neatly fit the tapered valve seat 8 formed on the upper end of the drain fitting. The outer diameter of the valve l2 inner diameter of the flanged ring l3 so that the flanged ring may be readily removed from the upper end of the fitting. The lower end of the valve member is provided with an eye I4. Pivotally mounted in the angular portion of the casting is a valve operating lever which is provided with a spherical portion I6. Fitting within the angular portion 7 is a fiber washer or bushing ll against which the spherical portion l6 of the valve operating lever bears. The valve operating lever is held in place by a threaded cap l8 which receives therein a coil spring I9 which serves to urge the valve operating lever toward the left as seen in Fig. 2 and to provide for a snap action movement of the valve. Connected with the outer end of the valve operating lever I5 is a lever 20 which is pivotally The upper end of the drain fitting is provided with a pair of openings 22 which communicate with the overflow passageway 4 so that the overflow from the bowl may escape through the drain fitting. Threadedly secured to the lower end of the fitting is a drain pipe 23. Secured over the opening without disassembling any parts.
In fittings of this character heretofore used, it has been necessary to entirely disassemble the unit and to remove the valve and its operating mechanism as well as the nut and washers and to then re-assemble the parts in order to secure the fitting in place. With my improved construction it will be seen that the drain fitting may be quickly secured in place or removed with a minimum effort thereby effecting a considerable saving in the time and labor required. It will also be seen that the nut 26 and the detachable flanged ring l3 cooperate to provide means for effectively securing the fitting in place and that the drain fitting, aside from the valve and its operating mechanism, consists of only two parts which are well adapted for quantity production at very low cost.
It will now be clear that I have provided a drain fitting which will accomplish the objects of the invention as hereinbefore stated. It is of course to be understood that the form of the invention herein disclosed is merely illustrative and is not to be considered in a limiting sense as various changes may be made in the details of construction without de parting from the spirit of my invention. The invention is therefore limited only in accordance with the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination of a bowl having a drain opening and an overflow opening, a drain fitting detachably secured in said drain opening and being exteriorly threaded to the extreme upper edge thereof, a flanged ring threadedly secured over the upper end of said fitting and normally disposed flush with the bottom of said bowl, a poppet valve slidably mounted in said fitting, said flanged ring having an opening therein larger than said valve whereby to permit the valve to pass therethrough, a valve seat formed on the upper end of said fitting and interiorly thereof, said fitting having a plurality of overfiow openings therein disposed below and immediately adjacent said flanged ring and said bowl having an overflow passageway connected with said overfiow openings, a nut threadedly secured over said fitting and cooperating with said flanged ring to secure said fitting in place, and mechanism for operating said valve.
