No. 3,597 5 Claims. (Cl. 4-203) This invention relates to closures for drains of wash basins, sinks, and the like, and in particular a drain having a perforated disc fitted in a washer in the bottom of a basin with a disc closure having a weight on one side pivotally connected to a rod in a drain pipe and actuated by a knob to close the perforations of the disc.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a closure for a drain of a wash basin, sink, or the like in which the closure is actuated by a knob mounted in the sink or Wash basin.
Various types of closures have been provided for wash basins, sinks, and the like and although the conventional closure which includes a disc on the upper end of a perforated tube is successful when new, the disc fills with waste and the perforations in the wall thereof are soon clogged, With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a closure carried by a vertically disposed rod with the rod actuated by a knob wherein the area around the disc and rod is substantially open so that waste and other refuse pass through the drain connection and provide an unobstructed passage.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a closure for a drain connection of a wash basin, sink, or the like in which the area around the operating elements is open so that waste, refuse, and the like pass through an unobstructed passage.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure for the drain connection of a wash basin, sink, or the like in which the closure is actuated by a knob carried by a vertically disposed rod slidably mounted in the wash basin or sink.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure for a drain of a sink, wash basin, or the like in which the mounting and operating elements of the closure are of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a drain tube sealed in an opening in the bottom of a wash basin, sink, or the like with a perforated disc in the upper end of the tube and with a solid disc having a weight on one side pivotally connected to a rod actuated by a knob on the upper end of a vertically disposed rod which is connected to the rod on which the disc is positioned by a horizontally disposed arm.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a view illustrating a drain connection of a wash basin, sink or the like with parts broken away showing a closure element in the drain in the open position.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view similar to that shown in FIGURE 1 illustrating the positions of the operating elements with the closure in the closed position.
FIGURE 3 is a vertical section through the upper end of the drain connection with the parts shown on an enlarged scale and showirn the closure disc in the open position.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved drain closure of this invention includes a disc having a weight 11 on one side and a U-shaped member'12 on the under surface, a vertically disposed rod 13 having an eye 14- on the upper end and pivotally connected to an arm 15 by a fitting 16, a vertically disposed rod 17 connected to the extended end of the arm 15 by a pivotal connection 18 and slidably mounted in a fitting 19 in the surface 20 of a sink 21, and a knob 22 positioned on the upper end of the rod 17 and having a stop washer 23 mounted on the rod 17 and positioned to co-act with the fitting 19 to seal the opening through the surface 20 of the sink.
The arm 15 extends through a nut 24 in the end of a nipple 25, the nut providing a closure for the end of the nipple and also a fulcrum for the arm 15 whereby downward movement of the rod 17 and knob 22 forces the fitting 16 connecting the arm 15 to the rod 13 upwardly to close the drain. In this movement the disc 10 is actuated against the under surface of a disc 26 having perforations 27 therein thereby closing the perforations. The disc 26 is also provided with an annular flange 28 in which the disc 10 nests to provide a positive seal for the drain.
The rod 13 and disc 10 are positioned in a drain tube 29 and the upper end of the tube 29 is provided with an annular flange 30 which is sealed in an opening 31 in a bottom 32 of the sink 21.
With the parts assembled as illustrated and described the closure disc 10, which may be of metal, or other suitable material, is actuated by the knob 22 through the rods 13 and 17 and the arm 15 to a closed position nested against the under surface of the disc 26, as shown in FIGURE 2 and to an open position as illustrated in FIG URES 1 and 3. With downward movement of the rod 13 the weight 11 causes the disc 1 to tilt whereby the drain tube is opened.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A drain closure for a sink comprising a drain tube having a perforated disc in the upper end, a disc having a weight on one side, a vertically disposed rod in the drain tube and pivotally connected to said disc, an arm extended from the vertically disposed rod through a connection at one side of the drain tube, and a second vertically disposed rod having a knob on the upper end pivotally connected to said arm.
2. A drain closure comprising a sink having a bottom and an elevated upper surface, a drain tube having a flange on the upper end positioned in the bottom of the sink, a perforated disc in the upper end of the tube, a solid disc having a Weight on one side positioned to nest against the under surface of the perforated disc for closing the drain connection, a vertically disposed rod in the drain tube and pivotally connected to the solid disc, a nipple extended from one side of the drain tube, an arm connected to the rod on which the solid disc is mounted and extended through said nipple, a second vertically disposed rod pivotally connected to the extended end of the arm and slidably mounted in the elevated surface of the sink, and a knob on the upper end of said rod.

A drain closure for a sink having a bottom provided with a drain opening therein, comp-rising a drain tube having a flange on the upper end positioned in the drain opening in the bottom of said sink, a perforated disc positioned in the upper end of the drain tube, a solid disc having a weight on one side and having a U-shaped element on the under surface positioned in the drain tube, a rod having an eye on the upper end in the drain tube and positioned with the eye extended through the U- shaped element of the solid disc, and means for actuating the solid disc to close perforations of the disc in the upper end of the drain tube.
4. In a drain connection, the combination which comprises a vertically disposed drain tube having a perforated disc in the upper end and having a nipple extended from one side, a sealing disc having a Weight on one edge positioned in the drain tube, a vertically disposed rod positioned in the drain tube, means loosely connecting the solid disc to the vertically disposed rod, an arm pivotally connected to the vertically disposed rod and extended through the nipple on the side of the drain tube, a second vertically disposed rod having a knob on the upper end slidably mounted in a fitting, and means pivotally connecting said second vertically disposed rod to the extended end of said arm.
5. In a sink drain closure for a sink having a bottom provided with a drain opening therein and an elevated upper surface, the combination which comprises a drain tube having an annular flange on the upper end positioned in the drain opening in the bottom of the sink, a perforated disc in the upper end of the drain tube, a solid disc also positioned in the upper end of the drain tube, a rod loosely connected to the solid disc, a nipple extended from one side of the drain tube, an arm loosely connected to the lower portion of the vertically disposed rod in the drain tube and extended through the nipple on the side of the drain tube, a fitting mounted in the elevated surface of the sink, a second vertically disposed rod slidably mounted in the fitting in the elevated surface of the sink, means loosely connecting the lower end of said second vertically disposed rod to the arm, means sealing the end of the nipple extended from one side of the drain tube around said arm, and a knob positioned on the upper end of said second vertically disposed rod.
