Description

yl 1 w. A. BOETCKER 2,166,088,
GARMENT F iled Sept. 27. 1938 IN V EN TOR.
A TTORNEYS.
. Patented July 11, 1939 William A. Boetcker, Flushing, N. Y., assig'nor to Talon, Inc., a. corporation of Pennsylvania Application September 27, 1938, Serial No. 231,890
Claims. (Cl. 2-234) This invention relates to garments and particularly to an improved fly Construction for trousers. The invention is an improvement upon the trouser construction shown in the Craig Patent 1,960,218, granted May 22, 1934.
While the construction of the Craig patent has been used commercially it has been found especially in trousers made of light weight material, that the fastener will make an impression in the front face of the fly in the severe pressing operations employed by tailors. Various attempts have been made. to solve this problem but up to the present time none of them have been successful.
The principal object of my invention therefore In the construction of 'the inner orright fly, the front of the garment 1 extends to a point closely adjacent'the fastener elements and terminatesin a hemmed edge l8. The right fly or flap underlies the fastener and is secured to the hemmed edge it by suitable'rows of stitching 20 which also pass through the fastener tape H. An inner lining or facing 2| isprovided back of the flap Hi. It also has hemmed edges 22 .and 23. In the construction ofthe front or left flap the front body portion 8 extends across thefastener and terminates in a hemmed edge 24. The left fiy is positioned back of this edge and it has a hemmed outer edge 26.
is to solve the problem above explained and to Although in many cases a single padding strip produce a construction which will stand severe of suitable thickness and of suitable material may pressing operations without showing an impresbe employed, preferably a pair of canton flannel sion -or embossing of the fastener through the padding strips 27, 28 are positioned between the cloth. strip 25 and the front flap, the strip 2! being i A further feature of my invention is to elimisomewhat wider than the strip 28. The outer nate the forcing out of the fastener chain at the edges of these strips overlie the. inner fastener top of the fastener by the slider when inclosed tape 15 and extend to a position closely adjacent position. the fastener elements It but do not overlie'them.
Other objects of my invention will hereinafter The edges of the strips adjacent the fastener elei more fully appear. In the accompanying drawing ments are in alignment while the opposite edges I have shown for purposes of illustration one emare not. This provides a maximum thickness adbodiment which my invention may assume in jacent the fastener elements and at the same practice. In the drawing: I time, avoids any thick shoulder along the oppo- Fig. 1 is a front view of a pair of trousers with site side of the padding. The padding strips are of b Referring to the drawing the trousers include such thickness as to compensate for the extra 40 a right body portion 1 and a left body portion 8 thickness of the fastener elements on that side, with a front fly opening generally designated 9. it being observed that no such extra compensa- The fly consists of a pair of overlapping flaps the tion is needed on the opposite side because of inner or right flap being designated l0 and the the extra thickness. In this manner the heavy i outer or left one ll. Any convenient attachment pressure operations will be distributed throughmay be employed at the belt line such as the butout a wide area and will not cause the fastener ton l2 and hook l3. A slide fastener disposed beelement to make an impression on the front surtween the flaps is provided for closing the openface of .the cloth. Preferably the padding strips ing and it comprises a pair of tapes [4, l5 having extend substantially throughout the length of r rows of fastener elements l6 attached to-their the fastener and are curved at their lower ends adjacent edges. A slider I'I slides over the rows of fastener elements for engaging and disengaging them in a well known manner. The tape I5 is secured to the left or front flap I l and the tape i H is secured to the right flap II.
as shown in Fig. 4 at 29.
Another advantage of this construction is that the front of the fly will lie smoother and flat as will be seen from the drawing.
As seen at the upper portion of Fig. 5 and in Fig. 6, the upper end of the left fastener stringer is curved inwardly at 30. This curvature extends for approximately the length of the slider l1 and is for the purpose of accommodating the slider in its position at the upper end without pushing the outer stringer toward the edge of the fly opening. This provides a neater and more satisfactory construction.
While I have shown and described in this application one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purpose of illustration and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is: 1. In trousers having a fly opening, the com- .bination of a pair of overlapping flaps, a slide fastener disposed between the flaps for closing the opening, the slide fastener including a pair of tapes and a row of fastener elements on each tape of greater thickness than the tapes, one of the tapes being secured to each flap, and a strip of padding in one of said flaps extending alongside and closely adjacent the fastener elements to offset to a substantial degree the thickness of the fastener elements. I
2. In trousers having a fly opening, the combination of a pair of overlapping flaps, a slide fastener disposed between the flaps for closing the opening, the slide fastener including a pair of tapes and a row of fastener elements on each tape of greater thickness than the tapes, one of the tapes being secured to each flap, and a strip of padding in one of said flaps extending alongside the inner row of said fastener elements and closely adjacent thereto to offset to a substantial degree the extra thickness of the fastener elements.
3. In trousers having a fly opening, the combination of a pair of overlapping flaps or flies, a slide fastener disposed between the flaps forclosing the opening, the slide fastener including a pair of tapes and a row of interlocking elements on each tape of greater thickness than the tapes, one of the tapes being secured to each flap, and a strip of padding in the front flap or fly positioned to overlie a substantial portion of the inner tape but not to extend over the fastener elements to offset the extra thickness of the fastener elements.
4. In trousers having a fly opening, the combination of a pair of overlapping flaps, a slide fastener disposed between the flaps for closing the opening, the slide fastener including a pair of tapes and a row of fastener elements on each tape of greater thickness than the tapes, one of the tapes being secured to each flap, the inner or right fly being secured to the right front closely adjacent the right or outer row of fastener elements, and hemmed edges on the right front, left front and linings providing an extra thickness of material along the outer side of the rows of fastener elements which substantially offsets the extra thickness of the fastener elements, and a strip of padding in one of said flaps extending alongside and closely adjacent the fastener elements to offset to a substantial degree the extra thickness of the fastener elements on the other side.
5. In trousers having a fly opening, the combination of a pair of overlapping flaps, a'slide fastener disposed between the flaps for closing the opening, the slide fastener including a pair of tapes and arow of fastener elements on each
